Electric SLS AMG Seen Scooting Around the Nurburgring
Electric cars are coming, there’s no question about that. The allure of constant, instant torque and a freedom from gasoline dependency is just too good of a combo to pass up. Mercedes isn’t dragging their feet about it either. They’ve already announced plans for an all electric B-Class, but to show how serious they are, they’re also developing their SLS AMG super car into a battery powered speed machine. They made the promise to do so last year, at least. Now, we’ve spotted the real deal cruising the Nurburgring in public.

In truth, the SLS E-Cell looks nearly identical to the SLS AMG. There are a few telling features that set it apart. Obviously, it’s quiet. There’s no burbling V8 to herald the SLS E-Cell’s arrival as it comes barreling around the corner. Also, there’s no exhaust piping. Also, it’s got an E-Cell badge.

The concept car had all-wheel drive and roughly 525hp with 649lb-ft of torque. Having that much twist available from a standstill must be an incredible feeling, but our hopes are tempered by the weight of it’s batteries. Unlike the SLS AMG, however, the E-Cell will feature a carbon fiber chassis. Hopefully that’ll bring the weight down enough for it to compete with it’s gasoline powered twin.

In fact, it should be able to compete with it’s other electric rivals as well. Audi’s E-Tron R8 is also coming out soon. That’s not even mentioning the host of hybrid super cars coming from Porsche, Jaguar, Ferrari and McLaren. Not a bad time to be a sports car far.
