Ever wonder what a modification will do for real-world performance on your M157-powered AMG? This thread outlines everything!

If you have a newer AMG, you’ll likely already be looking at performance modifications at some point. For these cars, and others that share the M157 turbocharged V8, power adders are plentiful. But you might not be sure where to start. Engine tune? Downpipes? Better tires? It can all be a little overwhelming at first, but MBWorld forum members have found a way to clarify it all.

Forum member brutus_tx has done an amazing thing though. He’s compiled a list of all the tuned E63 AMG cars, what modifications they have, and what kind of 1/4-mile times they have achieved.

You’re looking to get some new go-fast goodies, and this MBWorld forum thread starts with best bang for buck. Now, you’ll have to spare some extra buck for higher amounts of bang. For instance, an ECU and TCU tune will be more expensive than a pair of drag slicks. However, their speed increase makes up for the cost. For this thread, everything significant is accounted for, including lighter weight wheels and tires. This thread doesn’t include some things you might think of, however.

Axle-back exhausts aren’t mentioned at all, plus intake filters aren’t on there either. These modifications are so common and inexpensive that they don’t really register as bang for buck. Instead we’re looking at things that have a significant power gain.

Horsepower figures are easy to claim online. Dyno numbers are also easy to manipulate. Real world numbers only come from the real world though. A a spinoff of the original post, brutus_tx started a second thread dedicated to drag racing. Using the Dragy performance GPS monitor, quarter mile times have been compiled, and stored along with the driver’s car and the associated modifications.

It’s a monumental effort, with spreadsheets containing all the technical details. From fuel pumps to plug gap, everything is documented to keep the performance up. And it has proven to be successful. The database has AMG cars deep in the 10 second range, which is remarkably quick. But as we have seen in the past, 1/4 mile and runway drags are where AMG’s really shine despite their heft.
