German carmaker sells five cars per minute and makes more money in three seconds than most people bring home in an entire work week.

It isn’t really surprising to learn that a luxury car manufacturer like Mercedes-Benz makes a lot of profit. Things like leather interiors and fancy trim carry ridiculously high margins, and they’re goodies that many customers will happily pay extra for. But while we can obsess over things like quarterly and annual figures, it’s even more astounding to put those numbers in a different perspective.

Which is exactly what U.K.-based insurance company Staveley Head did in one fascinating presentation. The company studied the financial numbers of 14 different automakers, utilizing 2017 year-end profit data. They then broke down those numbers into different time frames to really put things into perspective.

“We decided to break the figures down to show exactly how much the world’s leading brands make every second, minute, hour and day worldwide, to create an actual picture of how the industry looks right now,” Staveley Head managing director Ashley Peters explained to CNBC’s Make It. “When looking at the recent performance of Mercedes-Benz sales and profits worldwide versus competitors, it’s clear to see that Mercedes are one of the leaders in the ‘luxury’ car sales market.”

So how impressive are those segmented profit numbers, you ask? Well, how about $29,247,743 every 24 hours, or $1,218,656 every hour? That also equates to $20,310 every minute, $1,017 profit every three seconds, and an astounding $339 profit each second. Revenue-wise, Mercedes-Benz rakes in $300,844,800 per day and $12,535,200 an hour. The automaker moves five cars every minute, adding up to 7,200 units per day.

Altogether, Mercedes-Benz ranked third in total revenue in Staveley Head’s analysis. Which is pretty impressive for a company that doesn’t bother selling dirt cheap, volume-producing, non-luxury vehicles. But we’re guessing they’re just fine with ranking near the top of pretty much every profit category.
