Mercedes-Benz to Drop Almost All V8-Powered Models from U.S. Market for 2022

Supply chain issues force Mercedes to make a surprise announcement. Almost all V8-powered models will be shelved for 2022.

File this under news we never wanted to hear. Mercedes-Benz has informed dealers via a letter that most V8-powered models will not be available to American buyers in 2022. We will give you a moment to let that statement sink in. Look, we all know that with the world moving towards electrification the days of the V8 are numbered anyway. But Mercedes still makes some wonderful V8-powered cars and SUVs that we want to enjoy for as long as we possibly can. Now it seems like they are being ripped from our hands.

The folks at Autoweek have reported that due to supply chain issues a significant number of V8-powered cars will not be offered stateside for the 2022 model year. At this point it is not clear exactly what those supply chain issues are. Some V8 models will still be offered. And there are other powerful engines that will still be available. So, it would be interesting to know what exactly is impacting the production of specific V8 engines. Mercedes provided a list of models that will not see a 2022 model in America. You might want to cover your eyes because this reads like an all-star list of models.

V8-Powered

Mercedes is telling its dealers not to expect the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe, C63 S Cabriolet, GLC63 S Coupe, GLC63 SUV, GLC63 S SUV, E63 S sedan and wagon. Also canned are the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 and 63 S twins. You should also not look for a 2022 GLE580 4Matic, GLS580 4Matic, the G550 and the Mercedes-AMG G63. The list also includes the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe and SUV and the larger Mercedes-AMG GLS63. And bad news for those hoping to grab a Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 4Matic in 2022. That model will also skip the 2022 model year here in the U.S. Ouch. That is quite a list. And some models such as the beloved G-Class only come with V8 power so there will be no G-Wagen at all in 2022. Cue the sad trombone sound.

G 63

You can still get a some V8-powered Mercedes cars in 2022. The S 580 sedan for example is not among those listed but that is little consolation. With V8 engines already quickly disappearing from the automotive landscape, losing out an entire model year is concerning. Will these models be back in 2023?

Will they ever come back with V8-power? If you thought the prices of used cars was already nuts, just wait to see what this does. We can’t imagine what the asking price of a G-class is going to be now. Great news if you already have one but not so great if you were a buyer. The withdrawal of the V8 models applies even to vehicles that had already been ordered by customers.

V8-Powered

Hopefully we get at least some of these models back soon, but there is no guarantee. It will also be interesting to see if this move costs Mercedes-Benz sales in the U.S. For example, the Cadillac Escalade SUV and CT5-V Blackwing sedan can both still be had with V8 power. Will Mercedes faithful be enticed to try the American brand? Only time will tell.
