Mercedes

Now For the Electric G Wagon

Moving to the nether ranges of Mercedes’ future electric line-up, the G-Class will gain an electric variant by 2025. The biggest transformation since the rugged Mercedes of 4x4s first appeared in 1979, the EQG will retain its classic visual ties with combustion car. But it will be set apart by a raft of styling tweaks to bring it into line with the rest of Mercedes’ EQ range.

Described as a near-production study, the Munich concept benefits a subtle styling makeover comprising lit trim elements. Add a 3D star pattern grille and exclusive 22 -inch aluminum wheels. A wallbox charger-like storage box is in place of the regular spare-wheel carrier and Concept EQG’s roof rack gains a bright LED strip. To suggest the electric G-Class’ potential to undertake the most demanding of adventures.

While no mention is made of its technical potential, Mercedes insists that a battery-electric powertrain will enhance the G-Class’s trademark off-road ability. That via four individually controllable wheel-mounted motors for enormous pulling power and controllability. Add the regular 4×4 low-range gearing hewn to that famous old uncompromising off-road G-Class ladder chassis, independent front and rigid axle rear suspension at the front.

Maybach

Even Maybach Joins in on the Electric Mission

Looking even further up the range, now meet the ultimate electric Mercedes-Benz. The all-new EQS SUV flaunts a series of Maybach-specific signatures. From two-tone paint to a bespoke cabin with individual ‘first-class’ rear. Mercedes’ third bespoke electric model after the EQS and EQE saloons, Concept EQS represents the transformation of Mercedes-Maybach from a tradition-rich luxury brand. Into a more progressive electric future.

Maybach’s move to electric is partly driven by the need to beat traditional rivals, Bentley and Rolls-Royce to a rapidly changing and ever younger customer base in key markets like China, Russia, South Korea, the US and Germany. The flagship brand believes that customers are changing as quickly as their perceptions of motoring luxury.

Based on Mercedes’ new MB.EA EV platform, the Maybach EQS SUV will likely use a similar bi-motor set-up to AMG EQS 53 saloon. It develops around 650 HP and 700 lb ft with a range of around 373 miles. Concept EQS SUV retains its Benz donor’s chassis. But it has been under the Maybach design scalpel to adopt a luxury version of the EQ black panel. This one adopts a Maybach grille look.
