Slew of New 4-Cylinder AMG Engines
New CLA and GLA 45 AMG Models Will Have a Completely Redesigned 4-Cylinder Engine
Turbocharging may just be the way of the future. But the excessive heat caused by squeezing out over 350 horsepower from a 4-cylinder AMG engine has caused engineers to scrap any future development of the current M133 engine.
That’s according to AMG head, Tobias Moers. Cylinder head temperatures are mostly to blame, so a ground-up re-design will be the best way forward.
Targeting 400 horsepower might seem like a lot from a four-banger that’s just over 2-liters. But remember the out-going 2.0-liter engine was making 376 ponies. Affalterbach’s finest will be afforded every opportunity to reach that number with a clean slate design. AMG will want to hit that mark as well, as Audi had announced its new RS3 will pack 394 horsepower.

If they do reach (or exceed, as they sometimes do) that 400-horsepower mark, it could stand as the quickest hatchback in production. And it will almost certainly be the most powerful four-cylinder production car ever produced.
Dual-clutch hybrid power for the A-Class AMG cars has not been mentioned, but shouldn’t be ruled out. Tobias has mentioned before that he’s a proponent of the technology, which will be used in a new hypercar.
