Let’s talk chassis development

Did we also mention that the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe comes with an electronically-controlled limited-slip differential to improve traction and power delivery. Additionally, the 4DC comes with active rear-wheel steering. Below 62 MPH, the rear wheels point in the opposite direction of the front wheels. Above 62 MPH, the rear wheels steer the same way as the front wheels. This creates a dynamic wheelbase and improves low speed agility and high speed stability. That pairs well with the AMG-tuned speed sensitive steering that changes depending on the driving conditions and drive mode selected.

Depending on which AMG GT model you select, there are a number of sweet wheel and tire packages to choose from. The AMG GT 53 and 63 models featured 19-inch wheels, which measure 9.5″ wide up front and 11″ wide out back. Those wheels feature tires measuring 255/45R19, and 285/40R19, respectively. However, if you opt for the full bore AMG GT 63 S, 20-inch wheels are fitted. Also measuring 9.5″ wide up front and 11″ wide out back, they are shod with 265/40R20 tires up front and 295/35R20 tires out back.

All AMG GT 4DC models are fitted with large 6-piston front brakes and single piston rear units. However, carbon ceramic stoppers are an available upgrade for 63 and 63 S models. Mercedes touts consistency under extreme conditions and quick lap times, which is promising.

The family hauler has real aerodynamics

If this hardware didn’t already sound appealing enough, there is more. Specifically, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe features active aerodynamics. Specifically, Mercedes tells us that AIRPANEL tech, lifted from the AMG GT R is present on the 4DC. AIRPANEL uses vents and louvers in the front bumper cover to optimize aerodynamics and engine cooling. Similarly, the rear spoiler is an active unit that can sit in multiple positions.

From there, an optional aerodynamics package is available. It replaces the active wing for a more aggressive, fixed unit. The front end also receives a splitter element. Mercedes claims that rear downforce is improved with no consequence to drag or front end lift.

The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe celebrates its world premiere on March 6th, 2018 at the Geneva International Motor Show. Sales release of the first four- door AMG GT is in early 2019 for the AMG GT 63 and 63 S and in mid-2019 for the AMG GT 53.
