New Mercedes-AMG GT2 Is a Race Car You Can Take Home

By -

The new Mercedes-AMG GT2 is a track-only customer racecar.

Mercedes-AMG’s new GT2 is a track-only racing coupe with a symphony of V8 power, carbon fiber, and a swan-neck wing.

Mercedes-AMG is challenging the likes of the new $1.7 million Ford GT Mk IV and Maserati MC20 GT2 for track-day street-illegal dominance. HypeBeast says the homologated Mercedes-AMG GT2 is a sibling for the GT3 and GT4 racers, but its no little brother worthy of dismissal. Instead, the new GT2 is a twin-turbocharged track-only coupe with rear-wheel drive (RWD) and power to spare.

The Mercedes-AMG GT2 is a 707-horsepower customer racecar for track-use only.

In addition to a striking F1-inspired livery, the new Mercedes-AMG racecar packs a six-speed sequential transmission situated with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Moreover, the new model packs a self-locking differential to channel its slide-inducing power and torque.

What engine did Mercedes-AMG put in the GT2?

The new Mercedes-AMG GT2 packs a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8. The mill churns out 707 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. While that doesn’t sound like much compared to the road-going AMG GT Black Series’ 720 horsepower, it’s more than enough grunt to motivate the lightweight homologation car around race tracks. Moreover, the new GT2’s 707 horsepower makes it the most powerful customer race car.

The Mercedes-AMG GT2 is a street-illegal track day toy.

Additionally, the 4.0L V8 packs a flat-plane crankshaft, suggesting that the new track star will have an immense redline and a song to complement it.Car and Driver says the Black Series with a comparable flat-plane powerplant has a 7,200 rpm redline. Of course, the Black Series is a $400,000 road car with track day credentials, not a purpose build track-only machine for “gentleman drivers.”

How fast is the new Mercedes-AMG GT2?

The new GT2 could hit 60 mph in around 3.0 seconds, give or take. That’s on par with Car and Driver’s test of the comparable Black Series. However, the new homologated racer isn’t meant to lay down drag strip times, rather clip apexes around the world’s most challenging circuits. The Mercedes-AMG GT2 promises to be an event on the track with its massive rear wing, customizable suspension, and weight-saving carbon fiber.
