Mercedes-AMG Not Developing C 53 After All, Go Auto Reports

No New Mercedes-AMG C 53

Mercedes will focus on its 2019 C-Class lineup first before it even thinks about a C 53 powertrain.

The rumor mill were aflutter with the possible imminent introduction of a C 53 AMG after AMG recently trademarked the name. However, it seems that the first time we’ll see any variant of this car will be once the W205 has run its production cycle. Hopes and dreams torn asunder.

Fret now, however. Go Auto recently spoke with Jerry Stamoulis, Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific public relations and product communications manager, who claimed Mercedes would evidently let this generation C-class run its course before introducing a C 53 AMG variant.

Noting the current AMGs on offer in the C-class lineup, Stamoulis said in Go Auto’s report, “Anything is technically possible, but there is no consideration at this stage for a 53 powertrain for the C-Class. The 43 package is enough for this vehicle, it’s a lot lighter than an E-Class, I think it does everything that you want a C43 to do, so it’s probably the right package for that car right now.”

No New Mercedes-AMG C 53

That means the 53 AMG series will stay on just the E-Class and CLS-Class—for now.

By the time the next generation of C-Class comes out, the need for three different AMG engines might not be necessary, leading us to believe the C 43 might be the one to get bumped. As it stands, the “53” would be significantly more powerful and deliver the same type of fuel economy as the “43.” Plus, it’ll expand Mercedes push for electric assist on their vehicle line.

Usurping the performance of E and CLS models has always been a problem for the smaller, lighter C-Class when equipped with the same engine. As such, it will be interesting to see if the folks at Mercedes put a slight hold on power once that engine finds its way into the production version. We’ll just have to wait a year or two to find out.
