2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series

Car and Driver’s “Up Close & Personal” video series has taken a few steps back in time to an era when Mercedes’s exterior designs were a little softer on the eyes, their interior designs were a little harder with the plastics, and today’s technology was a bit more damp behind the ears.

Technology like the legendary M156 6.2-liter engine, the first V8 engine designed entirely in-house by AMG. Let’s refresh our memory for a moment and review the pertinent specifications. 507-horsepower and 465 lb-ft. of torque. Naught to 60 takes 4.1 seconds. Naught to smile is much quicker and all it takes is a passing glance at those bulging fenders that may remind you of the CLK GTR.

Warning: The pornographic musical bed could trigger memories of your more private activities of 2008, but never worry because the soundtrack gets serious at around 1:56. Car and Driver puts a camera and a mic right next to the tailpipes as the CLK63 AMG Black Series runs upward through its seven gears. There is something titillating about hearing such a blue-collar sound coming out of a white-collar car — it’s almost as fun as getting to hear the Queen pass gas.
