RENNtech Squeezes Nearly 600 Ponies from A45 S AMG

RENNtech has proven AMG’s 2.0 liter turbo is indestructible by squeezing out 592 horsepower on stock internals.

There’s a saying that goes “10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound bag.” If you translate that in automotive terms, it would be 594 horsepower in a small hatchback. That’s exactly the number that RENNtech Europe has extracted from the A45 S. Road & Track reports the extra 176 horsepower was achieved while retaining stock internals. Is this proof that AMG’s M139 4-cylinder turbo is utterly bulletproof in stock form? We’re certainly starting to think so.

AMG’s A45 S already has a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds, so adding that much more horsepower will bring the acceleration times down dramatically. Will the time be under 3 seconds? We don’t know that yet. Will top speed be higher? You bet it will. But more importantly is everything gained “in the curve.” The curve part of the dyno graph is typically more impressive than overall gains, because they apply to drivability and the meat of the power-band where an engine spends most of its time.

The power increase comes from more than just an ECU tune. A new turbocharger is used for the A45 S Stage II kit, presumably because RENNtech discovered the stock unit was limited on the amount of boost it could make. Interestingly, RENNtech posted a video of a dyno run with just their ECU tune, and the stock turbo shows no evidence of turbo lag. The dyno run was done in a higher gear, so that could also play into the lack of lag. See for yourself below.

We would have to imagine that lag of some sort would be evident with a larger turbo. Technology has come quite a way in eliminating that through variable vanes. The fact is, we don’t yet know what turbo is used, so all we can do is speculate and dream about getting behind the wheel.

While this Stage II is being developed for the A45 AMG, we’ll be able to enjoy it through the CLA45 AMG. We cant wait to see one of these at the drag strip, half mile drags and putting a hurt on supercars during track days.
