S-Class Pullman Spied: A Mercedes to Make Ned Flanders Nervous

Spy-Shots of Cars

Ned Flanders may get nervous at the remarkable length of this S-Class Pullman, but it’s really Mercedes-Benz executives who need to get nervous. This thing’s going to be a 21-foot flop.

I’ve seen a couple of stretched Benzes in my day, but this one alarms me. I’ve never seen a stretched limousine in full camo, but there’s a first time for everything, and this Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman is the bearer of the blindness in its first-ever spy shots. As if there wasn’t enough blinding vinyl on regular cars, this thing comes along and makes your eyes want to leave their head.

When the production model comes out, I’m sure the S600 Pullman will look fine, but fine won’t cut it for a car that is expected to start at $1.16 million. If this thing is going to be that much, it needs to look like cost is no object — even in spy photos. This 11,685-pound test mule falls short of emanating that level of prestige. While it would be nice if this was the second coming of the 600 Grosser, I predict it will be the second coming of the Maybach, and we all know how that went.

Granted, this particular test mule can withstand continuous fire, hand grenades and explosions, but there are plenty of cars out there that can tack on the armored steel body panels. If Mercedes wants to succeed with this Pullman, it has to have the presence of the Presidential state car, a.k.a. “Cadillac One”.

Now, if Mercedes can figure out a way to get run-of-the-mill multi-millionaires to feel like heads of state, they may just hit the jackpot in a new niche.
