Sir Jackie Stewart Explains How a Watch Does Much More Than Tell Time

In the video below, former Formula 1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart recounts why his watch is one of his most prized possessions. His Rolex was a gift for winning the famed Monaco Grand Prix, a feat he repeated three times. To Stewart, the watch brings back memories of a more interesting side of Formula 1. It was a time when speed was the priority, and safety was an afterthought. And of course, the watch recalls memories of the “most glamorous, most colorful, and most exciting Grand Prix” of all: Monaco.

The Monaco Grand Prix was the go-to event for the wealthy and elite in the 1960s, and it still is to this day. Movie stars and entertainers also join in, forming a more elegant side of the otherwise ruthless sport. To win Monaco is a true accomplishment, something Jackie fondly recounts: “Today, almost 50 years later, the watch reminds me that I was good enough and fast enough to win it.”

That first win came in 1966, in a car that had none of the wings and aerodynamics we are so used to seeing on modern Formula 1 cars. Unlike the cars, which evolve every season, the Rolex Daytona is a timeless classic.
