Unimog Half Doka is Ultimate Attention-getting Work Truck

Unimog 416 Half Doka

In the Unimog universe, ‘Doka’ indicated a crew cab, which makes this Half-Doka Unimog something of a rare sight.

Before the Mercedes G-Wagen 4×4 Squared came around, the only portal-axle off-road vehicle that could fit any, and every need was, and still is, the Unimog. It wasn’t a pretty machine, and it didn’t have the squared-off edges of the G-Wagen, but if that little boxy SUV got stuck, the Unimog was there to rescue it.

In the Unimog universe, “Doka” indicated a crew cab, which makes this Half-Doka Unimog something of a rare sight. Instead of another row of seats, this 1986 model had jump seats. That was in order for it to have a larger bed. Even though this still has four doors, think of it more like an extended cab.

In a former life, this Half-Doka was a fire truck. It not only explains the vibrant color of red and the high-speed “super-fast” differential, but also the reason why it was built as a Half-Doka in the first place; the bed needed to be big enough for a large water tank. That water tank was removed, however, and in its place a proper Unimog drop-side bed was fitted.

Powered by the trusty 5.7-liter OM352 diesel motor, this truck is ready for any work you can throw at it. After all, the current version continues that success, being named 2018 “Vehicle of the Year” by Off Road magazine. Something it has done for the special-purpose category 14 years in a row.

We couldn’t think of anything better to buy for that specific person who thinks a G-wagon just isn’t conspicuous enough. You might have to sacrifice some of the luxury appointments of the new G-wagon models, but if it’s a big ride you’re after, the Doka is king. As a bonus, since it is over 25 years old, Unimog models like this one can now be legally imported for leisure use and a nice, relaxing “retirement.”
