91-vs 92 201 transmission question

My 92 201 2.3 finally reached 300K miles, with the original engine, never been apart, although the head gasket was beginning to go, and there was some timing chain noise. I decided to swap in a 195K engine and transmission from a well cared for but wrecked 91, and all is like new again.

My question is this-- the 92 and 91 trans differed, only in that the 92 has a vacuum device on the kickdown cable at the trans, and a solenoid located on the left side of the firewall. The 92 suffered from hard kickdowns, and Im wondering if this could have been caused by some failure in this vacuum system. Does anyone know what it is for, and could it cause hard kickdown shifts?

Thats the $40.00 trans modulator, I replaced it with my front flex disk and my hard shifting 92' smoothed out to like new.

im not so sure this is the modulator. I believe that the modulator is loated on the drivers side of the trans. This is a rather large plastic fitting that the kickdown cable passes through on the passenger side of the transmission. It also has a vacuum connection that runs up to the firewall mounted solenoid as I described previously.

Id like to have an idea of the function, and if it contributes to this hard kickdown of the trans i removed.

thanks, Joe.

sorry to kinda thread jack you but maybe whilst, you can help me out a little..

seems like you are very familular with how this trans shifts via the kickdown. I thought it kicked down via throttle cable... how did you acquire this info... do you have a manual or something? reason I am asking is because I have a 92 and it had a rebuilt trans... now it shifts as early as possible no matter how hard I press on the throttle, unless I manual shift through the gears.

I have asked on 190rev and mechanics, everyone said it was the valve body inside the transmission that needs to be replaced.. but I am thinking its this vacuum hose! maybe its just been disconnected all these years lol

thanks

it sounds like your talking about the upshift delay, won't cause harsh upshift though. it delays upshift when cold to warm tranny fluid.
