Hello W201 forums!

My father and I just bought a 1984 Mercedes 190D on ebay for $500.

It has 175k miles on it and the auction states not drivable because the ignition lock cylinder has failed. Well that should be an easy fix...but I am here for some general information. Its a crap shot with not much detail...but I did the same for my 260E and I revived her for relatively no money doing all the work myself.

I understand the 2.2L engine is the first diesel of this model year. What are the common problems to be looking for? At 175k miles, is the engine getting towards the end of its life or with maintenance is this a 500k mile engine?

I believe the suspension setup + drivetrain is very similar to the w124 so we should be good in that department.

Thanks

congrats!

the lock cylinder is not a hard fix

the OM601 2.2 is the first year production for the US market in the 84 190D, its stupendously long lasting with proper maintenance

a few things to look for on the drivetrain;
1.) oil change.
2.) replace the belt tensioner on the front, that can cause some serious issues and engine damage if it fails. sometimes they fail w/o warning.
3.) this is a 500K+ mile motor, same series as my 602.961 and thats 300k miles on original everything, still like new.
4.) I would do a tranny flush w/filter and a differential fluid change as well if you are looking to keep it for a while which I suspect you are.

suspension is similar to a W124, yes. you can do a 400E brake swap on this bad boy too!
