Dual Fuel Pumps

I was wondering why does a 190E 2.6 have a dual fuel pump system? Also one of my pumps is out and I was wondering if I could just swap the pumps and if it would work or not.

I guess we don't have any people who really know about the dual fuel pump system.

I thought I responded to this on another board. Anyway, you do need both pumps because of the changes to the fuel system in mid-86 or 87.

Yes, you need to replace both (in pairs) even if only one fails because the second one failing is probably just around the corner.
Use a bosch pair and do not gamble with other brands, it is a critical component. Also make sure the pumps come with the check valves.

- Cheers!

I never realized that the 2.6 has dual fuel pumps because my 2.3 only has 1 fuel pump. I wonder what the logic behind that is? I've actually never been around any car that had 2 fuel pumps. Interesting.

Any engine larger than 2.3L seems to have gotten the dual pumps (in series, not parallel) 190fan. Probably has to do with fuel flow and making sure the fuel pressure can be maintained with the increased flow.
Most likely overdesigned by Benz for the 2.6 because they wanted to keep the 3.0 and 2.6 parts the same (because they both went into the W124's). They must have had a reason and it may not be just engineering for the 2.6L.

I think you're right. I also got to thinking after I'd sent my previous post that shoehorning the 2.6 engine into the smaller W201 engine bay probably impacted fuel flow more than the MB engineers liked so they added the 2nd fuel pump. No doubt they over thought it. Growing up, I had a front row seat to the German engineering mindset and sweating the small stuff plays an integral role in the thought process. It's certainly an intriguing difference between the 2.3 and the 2.6.
