89 190E 2.6 transmission problem

Ok, so I just bought 190 about a minute ago. The transmission won't shift out of second gear. The lady I bought the car from said it happened when she put in the new engine. Is there anything like a sensor that controls this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Doug

I would check the shift lever linkage to see that D position is not putting it in the 2 position.

Welcome to the club, Doug. My 190E is kinda similar, it won't shift into 4th gear when in D... I thought it might be the linkage, but there's nothing between neutral and D, so I am sure it is in D. So like E-Klasse wrote, check it... you can try moving it slowly forward out of D to see if there's any more gears.

The kick down solenoid is something to look at; actually after going through all the transmission tech stuff, I've decided to just leave it and get a reman trans for around $1500.

Thanks for the replies. I have already checked the things you mentioned. There is a random cord hanging off the enging with the plug broken off of it. I can't see where it goes but do any of you know if it is a sensor that tell it when to change gears?
