Parts car and what to do when done

Today I am going to look at a 1992 2.3, with a bad transmission and 252k miles. The price is 950. Why am I even interested???

I want to swap the dashboard, body cladding and bumpers onto my 87. What is the best method to paint match them with the single stage coating? I can source paint but how do you layer it and make it blend? Going for the monochrome midnight blue look I always wanted and since I cannot find a body kit this is the next best thing.

While I swap the dash I will fix all my AC pods but this all I really need from
the car….i don’t think the 92 deserves to die just because of what I’m taking from it, should I part it out and make my money back or just scrap it/sell it…idk what to do with it when I’m done

I would advise against adding cladding to your '87 better daze. Different strokes for different folks but if you really need a car with cladding just buy one.
I am not going to change my '88 at all, it actually looks more classic without the cladding...

But then again my '89 has factory cladding so I have both.

To add the cladding you will need to drill a lot of holes and probably replace a lot of clips that will brake off during removal. And the bumpers also has to change as they are not the same.

What is wrong with this '92? Seems very cheap if it is not decrepit.

He said the 92 revs like it’s in neutral in 1st and second gear but it runs fine. My car is in far better condition tbh

I can do without the cladding… I mainly want to take its bumpers and skirts(to properly fix and cover jackpoint rust) and paint them my body color plus swap the dash. That would cost over 1000 if I did it piece by piece so I was wondering if this makes sense to buy just for those items

Sounds like it will make a good parts car at that price. How many miles on it?

Will you also swap the center console? Is it in good shape? Those go for ~$200 alone if the wood is in decent shape/slavagable.
I ask this because the '87 console/dash is a Brazilian coffee color with different finish than the post '89 black.

So it will not be an exact match if you do not also swap the center console. I had to do this on my '89 and kept the old one.
Which is great because I can use parts of it on my '88 which I will keep stock.

253K miles and no im okay with my current console, I want to black everything out on mine and don’t really care for the wood. Below is a picture of the console, I didn’t get a chance to see it today but if I can use most of what I’m looking for I’ll buy it.

some other items I might take are the smoked tail lights and speakers but I mainly want the bumpers and skirts

my dad recommended I just keep the whole thing and park it in somewhere in case I ever need things like fenders or glass

Yes if you can keep the whole car and storage is free, it is worth the price. That center console in the picture looks to be in good shape.

The bumpers from the 1992 car will not fit your 1987. The bumpers were redesigned with the facelift as were the front and back to be able to accommodate the new bumpers. The "Sacco" skirts also won't fit your pre-facelift car . I have to agree with dolucasi that it would be better to buy a post facelift car if you want these features. I agree with you that I would hate to see the 1992 you're looking at die. Since the transmission is bad, maybe you can part it out and make some of the cost back. Or maybe if you have free storage, keep it and use it for parts for your current car for the coming years since so many W201 parts are becoming NLA..

Thank you both, after visiting I think the car is not worth the hassle. The bumpers have a few cracks and the interior was a bit too dirty for my comfort. I guess I will continue to be patient, keep my 87 stock for now and maybe get a mid year whose bumpers and other parts will transfer more easily. Main goal is to body color match front and rear bumpers and maybe I’ll just patch the rust and do the same to my rockers

it was not a total waste of time tho …aren’t these rare? I’ve only seen aftermarket remakes these seem original

You're welcome. Those taillights don't look original to me. I'm not aware of anything from MB where the taillights weren't solid red. I might be wrong but I don't ever remember seeing any like that. I'm afraid that you're SOL on the post facelift bumpers and body cladding fitting your pre-facelift car. The actual shape of the post facelift body was tweaked to the point that those particular parts are not compatible between all W201 model years.
