Easy Hood Venting Mod

You can vent your hood very easily by just removing a plastic shroud piece. It lets out a significant amount of heat especially when air is being blown over the engine.

In photo A you see the hood insulation and near the hood vents is a piece of plastic shroud between the hood and the insulation. In photo B the plastic shroud is removed and photo C is the plastic shroud itself.

All you have to do is unscrew the shroud and it comes off. This removes the mating surface of the engine compartment gasket, now allowing air to flow up over the engine and out the hood vents. If you want you can cut the insulation to further remove blockage. I chose to leave the insulation in tack. This way you can always return it to OEM.

I personally have not had an issue with water problems while washing my car or during rain. I don’t know if there would be any. Enjoy!

did you see any engine water temp drop?

I wonder if you would get steam on the windshiled on a rainy day?

No,but if you take those items off and look down through the vents...you'll see the motor.

DSC is just better at washing cars than me is all.

Jrocket, I think you are probably a great car washer. I take the sprayer and shoot right into the vents. When I dry my car I always open the hood and wipe every thing down even before I took off the shroud. So to me it's no different. Sometimes I even spray down the entire engine compartment.

I bought a small village of Keebler elves to do the engine compartment detailing.

I will be number 11.

If you lived in South Florida you would not be able to drive your car. In the summer I would try and follow the weather report only to be fooled, the forecast would call for a 10-12% chance of showers which really meant a severe thunderstorm on the drive home.

Damn right...the summer month's rain pattern is very unpredictable. I've driven from my house in bright sunshine only to be driving with drag radials in a downpour 15 minutes later...you ever see an E55 doing 50 in a 70mph highway?

PS...DSC...thanks for sharing.

OT...Rflow306...your youtube 1/4 mile run was outstanding!

J,

I am in the same boat as you. I don't drive the nice car in the rain. Thats what the other cars are for. Who wants to take out the E right after it has been raining when it is dirty!!!!

Hate to bring up an old thread, but I was reading around to try to get more of the S/C whine sound when my search came across this thread. I was trying to get those screws off, but they're hard little buggers to get off. I tried to gently press into it while unscrewing and it made a creaking sound before it popped back in again and now it's just turning without the screw getting undone. Any thoughts on how to get it out?

Try clamping it with a power grip vise, pull and turn.

Yea, you'll need some form of pliers with teeth on them to grab and twist the screws. Took mine off last night and found out the hard way; the two higher screws are plastic and using a screwdriver is useless so I basically had to break them out with a pair of pliers. Also, there are a number of plastic clips under the hood insulation pad that need to be undone or they will break, ask me how I know...

I did this mod today, and while I don't notice any louder noises from the S/C, I do notice something odd.

When I'm in the garage, if I rev it a bit, I hear a quick chirping/clicking noise from the motor before it revs up... like *snickt*VROOM, *snickt*VROOOM. Is that normal s/c engagement noise?

I'm waiting to do this with the data logger to get some readings before and after.

Not worried about rain since I drive my truck in any bad weather.

I have a slightly more aggressive plan than that though.
