Navigation Service Update DVD??
I'm currently using a 2004.2 Nav DVD in my '05 E320. Thanks to i12flytoday, I just updated my COMAND head unit software (version 46/06) so that I now have the option to display ETA at the bottom of the map.
I also tried to use a 2006.2 Nav DVD that I copied from a friend, but when I insert it into the Nav module I get a message that reads "No DVD. Please insert a Nav DVD".
I assume that I need to apply the Navigation Service Update as per DTB P-B-82.85/524a (AUG07). Can someone kindly tell me if applying this update will allow my Nav module to recognize the 2006.2 DVD?
To rule out the possibility that I am using an incompatible DVD or that my burning settings were bad, I made a duplicate copy of my 2004.2 DVD using the same disc type and burning procedure that I used for the 2006.2 DVD. My Nav module has no problem reading my copied 2004.2 DVD.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks for the response, Benz. Did you mean to say that I need to update my Nav module that is in the trunk? Remember, I already updated my COMAND head unit using the software provided by i12flytoday. That (COMAND) update allows me to see the ETA at the bottom of the map; however, it does not let me use the 2006.2 DVD. I believe the COMAND update is seperate from the NAV module update.

JKV: what burning protocol did you use? I have never succeeded in getting a usable copy of a NAV DVD by using NERO. I think they make it difficult if not impossible deliberately. They certainly have a right to prevent unauthoirized copying, but all I want to do is have a back-up, which is usually permissible.

It depends on what you are burning. If it just the ZIP with all the files it will never work. If you have an ISO that is created correctly it will work. Programs like DVD Decrypter will both create and burn an ISO perfectly. Don't bother with normal programs like Nero or similar.

I seem to remember people having problems skipping DVD release years. Meaning you couldn't go from 2004.X to 2006.X without going to 2005.X first.
With that said, I went from 2004 to a backup copy of 2006.1 with no problems. However, I updated my COMAND before going to a backup copy of 2006.2
Like Starbrite said, try the original 2006.2 disc and see if it works.

I have inserted (in the past) a new Nav disk into the unit in the trunk which caused a "Horizontal Status Guage" and the words "Installing Update" to immediately appear on my Comand Screen.
Of course, then my Comand became buggy in operation which required an update to the head unit software by the dealer to make everything work right again. That happend on my '04 E a couple of years after I got it. My guess is that there CAN be a nav update on certain Nav Map update disks.

Sounds like to me that you've got bad data that you're trying to burn. I'm guessing you FTP'd it down from a server somewhere and a few bits got lost.
How's your relationship with your dealer? Try asking them to "test" your Nav drive with a new disk to see if it will read it. That will tell if it's something with your COMAND/NAV or if it's your burn.

“DVD not recognized” – Navigation module/processor service DVD special tool (as per P-B-82.85/524a) W211 589 15 22 00 – dealer net $12.
Eject existing navigation DVD, insert service DVD wait about 20 seconds the update process starts automatically and take about four minutes. Eject the service DVD, insert your latest navigation DVD you will notice the progress bars on the head unit this indicates the new navigation DVD is loading successfully. When completed turn ignition off and wait about three minutes to allow MOST and CAN to sleep. Turn ignition on, allow the navigation to warm start and acquire the satellites. Check navigation for correct operation by entering a destination.

Thanks, konigstiger. It helps to know that we are both on the same page. I was hoping to find someone who has experienced a problem similar to mine and was able to resolve it through the use of the DVD update mentioned above.
So, if I understand this correctly, even though the service DVD is inserted into the trunk mounted module, the COMAND module is what actually receives the update. Is that correct?

No, with W211 589 15 22 00 you will actually update the navigation processor in the trunk to recognize newer navigation DVDs. In effect as it pertains to your particular vehicle, you already updated the head unit software now you need to update the software to the navigation drive in the trunk to recognize your newer navigation DVD. Progress of the update will display in the head unit because the navigation drive is simply reading the service DVD.

I am not judging anyone here but it would appear someone has tried to obtain a copy of this DVD from the Internet and it hasn't worked? Could this 'pirate' copy have damaged this COMAND? Would buying a kosher copy actually resolve the issue?
I keep all my original DVD's in the house and have the copy in the car, this has never been a problem and I have never had difficulty using the copy.
Good luck getting this issue resolved

I always thought the update was being done to the COMAND via the nav drive.
Thanks for clarifying.

COMAND update (w211589142200) performed by inserting the service DVD into head unit single disc player.
Navigation module/processor update (w211589152200) performed by inserting service DVD into navigation drive in trunk.

It's just a hunch but perhaps Navteq only includes the "processor update" portion with the initial release of each new mapdisk (i.e, update included on 2006.1 but not on 2006.2).
It doesn't really matter to me as long as I can get my Nav updated; however, I just thought that some of you might find this interesting.
