Okay, great. So does anyone have W211 589 15 22 00 files that can be zipped and shared so that I can apply the update? I really do not want to visit the dealership for this... they do not seem to understand these kinds of requests... I have the original 2006.2 DVD and am getting the same problem.

I'm guessing since it's illegal to share copies of this software, you're not gonna get public replies. Just go spend the $12.00 at your dealer.

2004s are much smaller files then 2006s.Try to use NERO 6, "copy DVD" with speed not more then 4X and on good DVD+R media(verbatime or ridata)

my comand unit has problems reading DVDR from Verbatim.. after varies of testing, JVC DVDR works the best with my comand.

maybe trying a different brand will solve the problem.

The first time I hear any other brand being claimed better than Verbatim. Are you really comparing the same writing speed media?

It is not about the $12. Already spent the $300 for the Nav update DVD. My dealer does not have the understanding for software etc... when I talk about this, it seems like news to them. If there is an online resource where I can order this update from, I would be happy to do it.

I guess MB considers these copies illegal but to me it is quite different from copying MAP DVDs. These service discs are sold without real profit (the disc media, packaging, delivery etc. take most of it). In this case I would consider it an advantage to MB that owners update their cars "for free". But this is only with the personal risk assumption, if something goes wrong, MB should not be considered responsible fixing the car then for free.

Of course this is just my personal opinion.

It sounds to me like your guy at the dealership is just "Blowing you off". Its incomprehensible that they would not know about software updates, since these cars came to the USA as 2003's there have been countless updates needed to the Audio & Nav systems to eliminate problems & conflicts that arose as new Nav Update disks came out. Your Guy is an a$$. You have another dealer near you?

I was also very suprised that Verbatim perform worst than the other brands (on comand unit at least)..
I tried burning the DVD with almost all the speed listed in nero, the comand just wont read. (burner = Plextor PX-708A)

anyways its just some of my experiences..

Well, after not getting anywhere with my dealership, I finally broke down and purchased a Nav Service DVD. Paid a little more than $25 for it. I would have paid anything just to not have to deal with my (now former) dealership.

I performed the update this afternoon (took all of about 5 minutes) and now I can use the 2006.2 map. I know 2006.2 is still old, but it is new to me.

The disc is for sale in the classified section if anyone is interested. https://mbworld.org/forums/classifieds/229715-sale-navigation-service-dvd-211-589-15-22-00-a.html

By the way...for those who are talking about what DVD/burner combination will work to copy a map - I used a Memorex DVD+RW 4.7GB (4X) and a Sony DRX-830UL-T Burner. Works great!

I don't know about the burner and/or DVD-R.

I have lite-on and used Memorex DVD-R. Burn it w/ DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/). It worked.... Nero didn't work.

Eject existing navigation DVD, insert service DVD wait about 20 seconds the update process starts automatically and take about four minutes. Eject the service DVD, insert your latest navigation DVD you will notice the progress bars on the head unit this indicates the new navigation DVD is loading successfully. When completed turn ignition off and wait about three minutes to allow MOST and CAN to sleep. Turn ignition on, allow the navigation to warm start and acquire the satellites. Check navigation for correct operation by entering a destination.
Will this update remove Video In Motion again which is set per SDS? I think it should not but with MB you never know!

Hopefully it will remove it.

When I did the upgrade I'm sure I inserted the DVD in the COMAND??

What are you talking about? Why would I want to get Video In Motion removed?

John's view is that VIM is way too dangerous and irresponsible and there are enough driving distractions already. I agree with him - especially at night. No one would intentionally wreck while glancing at the screen but it's not always the other person that this happens to. In the US and most other countries it was removed because it is illegal. You are not only endangering yourself but others as well. I personally think the 10kph cutoff is a good compromise.

But to answer your question - no - the Navi update will not disable it. It only updates the Navi processor in the trunk and does not go in the COMAND unit and makes no changes to the COMAND.

Polar Bear and others, honestly, I'm not looking down on the screen while driving. I'm just playing Video Clips on a dual layer dvd and that's it. The passengers quite enjoy it while driving longer distances on the freeway.

When I read that this is dangerous, then what is drinking? Eating? Looking on the screen for the directions (Nav)? changing radio stations? changing volume? changing CD? getting make up onto the face? shaving? reading newspapers (just seen again Yesterday morning)? and any more other things!

It's all a distraction but why are those then legal? I don't quit agree to the statement made about VIM!

Baloney--give him the part number quoted above and ask him to get you one.

Or, order it at http://www.mercedespartssuperstore.com

I want to verify that you CAN use the w211 and w219 on a 2004 w220. I read a post that I thought said you COULD do this, but can't find or have overlooked the post I THOUGHT I read. It basically stated that you'd get the additional features like ETA and Cell Phone signal strength info etc. Can anyone verify this before I order W211 589 14 22 00 and W211 589 15 22 00 to update my navigation. Thanks

Those 2 part numbers are not for the navigation processor. Those are update CDs for US COMAND APS head units as I recall. At least the W211 589 14 22 00 is for the COMAND HU!
Whereas W211 589 13 22 00 is for the Euro COMAND HU!

Thank you for the info, I DO appreciate it. I ordered both (before I read this post) as they were cheap. I guess I will see what happens when I insert the head-unit update CD. Is there a head-unit update specifically for the 04-06 W220?
