'05 E500 - water inside the trunk LID?

That's right, not inside the trunk, inside the trunk lid.

Got a bunch of rain here in Northern Va on Sunday. Opened the trunk for the first time last night since Sunday. My 14 year old heard the sloshing before I did.

I haven't had time to look for possible entry points. Has anyone heard of such a thing?

Thanks,

Dan

It may be the plate recess panel. See #210 in the diagram.

same problem

Yes, one time when I had mine detailed they told me they found the water in there when they vacuumed the trunk. Same thing, the water was not in the trunk itself, but in the lid. I have not had the problem since and attributed it to the fact that they were using a water under high velocity and pressure. I did not give it any more thought until I read this. Perhaps you should check with the dealer and see if others have had the problem.

Plate recess panel - yup, that could be it.

It appears that it eventually drained out from the rain we got, but I washed the car this evening and it did the same thing. If I pull on the lower edge of the plate recess panel I can get it to dain faster - otherwise it just drips out until it empties.

Fortunately it seems easily reproduced. Only place I can think that it would be getting in is at the upper seam, which runs the length of the trunk lid, where the panel meets the trunk lid.

+1 happens to me all the time. i checked and it looks as if the recess panel is in fact the culprit.

Yup! The diagram shows the license plate recessed subpanel as a separate attachment to the trunk lid. I wonder how many screws holds it on and is there a rubber gasket???

Definitely a collusion or damage to the rear portion of the Trunk Lid could cause a leakage in that subpanel area. Maybe just slamming down the trunk lid really hard could cause the panel to bend enough to let water get throuigh?

There hasn't been any damage to the car. Dealer says they attempted a fix but it obviously didn't work. The diagram above does not show any kind of a gasket.

While it's interesting to know that others here experience the same issue I've yet to hear from anyone with a fix. Might be something I have to tend to myself.

Thanks for the feedback,

Dan

Open the trunk lid...see the sponge type stuff where the drain is. It gets clogged with dirt and doesn't drain properly. Pull it out. Problem solved.

'Eh, I see neither drain or sponge type stuff.

Can you help me get a clue by describing where the drain is? I'd think it would have to be at the lowest point of the lid when the lid is closed.

Thanks,

Dan

*EDIT* Doh. I found it. Dead center, bottom edge of the lip. I'll either take the rear panel off and clean out the filter, or just dig out the filter.

Thanks Technician.

Dan

I dug my sponge out of there years ago for the same issue. Mine collected so much rain water the trunk would not stay in the up position.

Water 💦 in The trunk.

My problem was the tail light on the truck. The gasket around the light wore out.
