Just today I went back to the dealer for my 3000 mile checkup and asked the same question again. I now am being told that I should be using 5W-40. Can you give me a definitive answer as to which weight is appropriate or does it make a difference?
Thanks.
Dear Jerryvan,
Thank you very much for your post. This occurs as the automotive fluid standards have changed in the meantime (in May 2008).
In general, the following fluids should be used for AMG engines :
- Mobil 1 5W-40 for M156 engine (63er models)
- Mobil 1 0W-40 all other AMG engines (as well the AMG diesel engines that was used for the C 30 AMG)
- Mobil 1 5W-50 SLR engine
Before that change, the Mobil 1 0W-40 was used for the 63 models as well.
Best regards,

There are only three oils that are 229.5 and AMG approved:
Mobil 1 0w-40
Liqui-Moly 5w-40 Synthoil High Tech
Valvoline Synpower 5w-40 HST
Castrol 5w-40 and Mobil 1 5w-50 only meet MB229.3, which is outdated, and cannot be used in newer models (except Maybach and the SLR that specify 5w-50)
M1 5w-40 is not 229.5 or AMG approved, it is a 229.51 oil, designed ONLY for diesel models with DPF.

Something to keep in mind when visiting your local dealer:
MB and its company-owned dealerships pour Mobil 1.
Your dealer's ownership group has a sub$tantial marketing agreement with a major oil company for "pouring rights". As a general rule, at Penske dealerships you'll also see Mobil 1. At Hendrick stores, its Quaker State, and at Sonic dealerships, they'll try and sell you Z-Max, an oil additive that is also owned by Sonic head Bruton Smith.
While they may try and steer you toward the house brand, they may also offer alternatives. Whatever they're selling, with today's close engine tolerances, INSIST on an oil that meets the spec listed in this thread, and make them show you the container so you can read the 229.5 reference.
For 40 years, I've trusted Valvoline oils and lubricants in our racing and road cars, and never had an oil-related engine problem. We've also had good results with Mobil 1. Our vintage cars use Joe Gibbs Performance Oil for its high ZDDP content.

Mobil 1 Turbodiesel Truck 5w-40 (no MB passenger car approvals)
Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w-40 This carries ONLY the 229.51 rating, which is ONLY for use in diesel models with DPF. MB has stated that 229.x1 oils are only to be used in diesel models with DPF, and all other models are to use 229.5 oil. I am sure that if you look in your manual, you will also see that you must use a 229.5 oil.
There are two possiblities for this statement regarding 5w-40:
1. They are speaking about a different oil not sold in the US
2. MBUSA made a mistake, which happened before with 229.51 oils.
The best way to figure out which oil is best for your car is to use your brain: The cars require 229.5 oil that have a viscosity rating higher than -30, which leaves only those three oils that are -40 vicosity 229.5 oils:
M1 0w-40
Valvoline Synpower 5w-40 HST
Lubro Moly 5w-40 Synthoil High Tech
There is nothing special about M1, they just have a very valuable marketing agreement with MBUSA, I have never seen a Mobil product in a German service center.

I am running with 5W-40
With spirited driving its not uncommon to burn a liter of oil every 1500 - 2000 KLM with a C63. Especially during break in
Hope this helps
