E320, 2004, command / nav / radio unit turns on for 10 - 12 seconds then turns off
Hi, I have just purchased a 2004 E320 Avantegarde second hand. 103000 miles. Unfortunately, no user hand books came with the car- I am stuck, when I try turning on the CD / NAV / RADIO unit, the screen lights up for 10 to 12 seconds then turns off. It displays the words "Mercedes Benz" and that's all. I can buy another one on Ebay, but someone said it could just be a security code problem. If it is a security code problem, where could I get the code from? The previous owner has no records. Any ideas on how to get the unit working, or could it be defective and I need a new one? If I do get a second hand one, will it be a problem to install, or would I need security codes etc. Lovely car to drive, but with no satnav and music, its boring. Any ideas or assistance please? I have subsequently tried finding the fuse in the trunk and in the engine compartment, but cant find it. Diesel on the other forum said if I took the fuse out for 3-4 mins and put it back, the unit may reset. I took out each and every fuse individually then tried the unit and the power was still connected. Could it be behind the console anywhere. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

instead of messing with each and every fuse, disconnect the negative terminal on your battery. That's a sure way to kill power to the unit.

Headunit = interior fuse box, fuse 28 (15A)
To reset headunit (radio) pull fuse 28 and leave disconnected for about 45 minutes.
Audi Gateway (AGW) = rear SAM, fuse 6 (40A)
AGW reset pull fuse 6 and leave disconnected for a few minutes.
If resets do not work, you may need to update the AGW software (dealer or independent with SDS access) or unit needs replacement; or another device in the MOST-ring may be causing the problem; or the headunit may need replacement.

sounds like a software issue.
take it to MB dealer and have the software updated. it will be a disc used in conjunction with the MB SDS tester

Sounds like the system is down. Can be a trouble with COMAND, Sat control unit, AGW, Teleaid Control unit, Voice control unit, PSE phone control unit.......pretty much anything on the ring.

In my '04 I had an apparent radio failure that acted like yours... Turns out it was a bad CD changer which was not even in use at the time. All of the audio devices in your car are sort of "connected in series" like the very old Christmas lights of the early '50s. If one fails, they all go out.

thank you
Thanks very much for your assistance and advise, I have checked everything now with exception of taking the unit out - as I am just a DIY, will have to take it to Mercedes and get ripped off....!
Will post the fault once they have repaired it, so future problems like this can be exposed.

NAV unit now?
Hi,
I have fitted a second hand NAV unit from ebay. (all other compents working 100% now, except NAV system). The unit is jammed in Germany, just near Frankfurt airport and I am in the uk, it moves, giving me N, S, E & West, and lets me drive down the road etc. However, I live in the UK. It does not want to settle on current location. I have a vers 7 disc in it, have checked the 3 connection - all okay, even tried a new GPS unit, but it wont budge, gives me UK traffic reports and will source UK postcodes, but will not budge from its current position - is the unit defective, or do I have to unlock / reset it some how? Does it need to have an up-grade disc stuck in it?
Regards
Graham

Just got ripped off !!!
Hey guys I'm new here but have learned so mush already. I picked up an 2003 e500 on eBay with 137000 miles on it. And boy do i wish i had went down to pick it up! .Talk about not using "VASELINE" AND DAMN HE WAS BIGGGGGGGG!!! this a hole posted photos of this clean e500 i have ever seen with a lot of options like PAN ROOF / V60 PHONE / ELTRA TRUNK CLOSER / HK RADIO W6CHANGER /SPLIT REAR SEATS / And i must say this is a nice car. He said it had new tires / new batts / and in the posted photos the tires looked new.But when the arrived he had taken the new tires off /cut the phone cord close to the bottom of the floor phone compartment and took the cradle out / so the long short of it is i need a v60 phone cradle with the wiring harness. as i have a Bluetooth device . But my H/C radio is doing the same thing that browns was doing .I hit the power and the radio comes on shows the mb logo stays on for 30 sec then turns off. So after reading post in this forum i tried a reboot and now the radio comes on and says on but with the mb logo but that's it . thanks for any help

Just disable the MOST connection to the phone
take a look at my other post. I removed the telematics and it can function without the phone.

When I was messing with it before full reconnect. just removing the fiber would do what you said to the stereo. not working at all
I found this article on the Mercedes website that said the MOST system needs a complete fiber run to let the stereo work. Hope this works for you
