URGENT: NHTSA Opens investigation into fuel leaks on the E55.
Posting this new thread to bring attention to those of us who may not read the "Urgent notice. 03-06 E55's that were involved in the fuel sender recall are bombs" thread as its bumped over and over with the same issues we have read before.
Well, NHTSA Is actually actively investigating now and we need anyone that has had a problem and has not yet filed a complaint to do so ASAP. Reference NHTSA Action Number: PE12001. They are looking at this and if they give up its pretty much a done deal. We need to do anything we can to make this problem known more and more to NHTSA.
I'd emphasize the fuel leaks on the ground under the vehicle. They take this stuff very seriously.
A finding could lead to a recourse for those that have spent thousands out of pocket on these repairs.
Ok, I'm done being Toadster and making new threads about something in another thread now.
Find info towards the end of the thread here: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...-bombs-15.html
COMPLAINTS CAN BE FILED HERE: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

Same here I just try not t fill the car up more than 3/4 a tank. However, should I click the link and say I had the problem so that should it occur we aren't left out by not having that many complain?

No need to make false claoms. Hopfully NHTSA will force Mercedes arm tobdoba real fix for us and not this BS metal insert that does nothing.

MODS - this should be a temporary sticky at least until the NHTSA closes the case - no extre blabber in here, just people that have posted for the issue
this is a big safety concern, and deserves visibility...

I doubt you will receive anything back till after Mercedes has had a chance to respond to the complaint with their findings and solution to the issue. Hopefully no B.S. metal insert type answer again. Toyota got away with a tiny .01 cent metal washer for their sticky throttle problems. Manufacturers are notorious for half assed fixes when they can get away with it as costs to bring in thousands of cars can grow into the millions quickly. The fact that their first junk response to this problem has failed miserably maybe they will try a lil harder this time.
It's still an investigation that is ongoing and reimbursement will be based on what NHTSA feels is a proper repair for this plus how Mercedes treats people that have paid for these repairs in the past. Independent shops doing the work can lead to a grey area here.
New sending units would be great as I feel that is the only answer to this problem. Also the leaky sealing area of the gas tank itself needs to really be looked at as well. Seems there are two problems here. Nipples breaking off, and improper forming of the gas tanks at the threads/selaing surface of the drivers side sending unit when they were molded.

If you had fumes/a leak/signs of a leak I would make a report. Did you have repairs performed by a shop? If you did I'd keep receipts in a safe place pending the outcome of this.
I would note that you had fumes, learned of this common problem and found what you believed to be stains from a fuel leak on the top of the tank if that is indeed the case. The problem is very real and we do not need to make up any stories here. The evidence speaks for itself.

It is important to note that this problem is not limited to E55s.... it seems to affect MANY W211 MODELS. I've seen E63s, E350s, E500, E550s, etc... encounter the same problem. Maybe this link should get posted in the non-AMG W211 section as well (if it hasn't already).

Definitely a concern if you have family/kids
What would happened if you were driving and they were to pass out
Yes this recall covers fumes leaking into the interior that so file a claim!

FWW, both fuel senders + tank were replaced under MBUSA extended warranty. I'll file the NHTSA report ASAP.

Good to see you didn't get stuck with the bill. Even those that had the repairs paid for under warranty need to report the problem as it has been proved that the repairs do not hold up in a number of cases. Sooner or later you may be paying to replace that cracked sending unit out of pocket. Having the part revised or some sort of solution provided from Mercedes is what we need and they have not wanted to spend the time or money to fix this. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) this one is biting them thanks to the reports that everyone has made.

I agree with BBBSS. Do not make false claims. Being honest is the best way to get this resolved. One false move on our part can raise suspicions esp since your post is now documented and NHTSA does read automotive forums to gather as much information and facts as possible.
