New 1/05 Navigation CD Release

For those of us who still have an older nav system ( command 2.5); My 2002 S Class. I purchased the new 1/05 Nav cd pack. When I put it in my nav system, it could compute the distance out of my cd area, but it said that the nav data at the destination was incomplete.

I stopped at the Benz dealer and asked for a nav data update. He said there wasn't any from 2002. I persisted and lo and behold his tech guy downloaded a nav data software update into my system. Now I can put in any regional disc and the system computes the mileage and time and route and prints the route list on the screen, to any destination in the US. It's almost as good as the DVD system now, although once you get out of your regional disc area, it will show just the interestates and secondary roads. To get more detail, you would have to load the cd for that region.

So the moral of the story is, if you get the new discs, with an older system, get a software update from your Benz dealer. After a little haggling, he didn't charge me, because I told him that it was needed with the new discs I bought.

I got the Euro Comand from Steve, and I have the 1/04 discs. Will getting the 2005 discs help me in Los Angeles? Will the dealer be able to upgrade my Comand?

I'm also interested in the answer to this one. When I was down in LA, I noted that the map data for 101 in Hollywood appeared to be off by one on the exits (i.e. it would tell me "next exit" for Barham when it was really two exits down, etc). I think that was before I got the 1/04 disc update, but I'm not sure.

Anyone else notice this poblem, or can confirm that new discs don't have the issue?

I am thinking about purchasing new maps since the CDs are back from 2001. Assuming the 1-2005 is the newest set, does anyone know when they will release the next update? I would be upset if I bought it and then a new one came out right after. Does anyone know if the CD can be copied?

jimbo1mcm - Do you need the California region disc? If not, maybe I can split that with you.

Thanks.

I occasionally get to Palm Springs, so I need the disc. I don't think they will be releasing a new version pretty soon. Haven't been able to copy a disc yet. I tried a couple of basic Nero versions. Nero says it copied it okay, but when you insert it, the car says to insert a DX type disc.

Ok thanks for the info. Do you know if any dealers are selling them at a discount? I think mine is asking like $300+ for the set.

My dealer (Englewood, NJ) Charged me $257 plus tax.

FYI.......Successfully backed up disks using Alcohol 120% using SafeDisk 2/3 option, also 1/05 disks have "direct routing".

Good Info. If you have time, you might want to post the procedure you used, listing the steps. Thanks.

I am surprised a disc image of these discs aren't available on the internet through peer to peer like bittorrent. Seems like everything else you can think of are available.

I've been trying to back up disc 1 (California) of my 01/2004 CD-ROM set with Alcohol 120% (and using the "SafeDisc 2" setting) without success - is there some magic I'm missing? (I use a Mac; this is on a co-worker's PC at work ... he has a Pioneer DVR-107 burner)

I get a 667 MB disc image from Alcohol 120%, and after I burn a CD-R of it I can mount it on my Mac's Desktop and I can see all the files, but if I put it into my COMAND unit (Euro 2.0; Steve@MBenzNL-supplied), it says the CD is invalid or somesuch. Am wondering if I'm missing an option in Alcohol 120%, or maybe his Pioneer can't read all the "bad" sectors from the copy protection properly, or what ...

Riot,

The one disk (#7 1/05) I managed to backup, as posted earlier, turned out to be a fluke, I made enough coasters to handle a party of twelve .... but I've kept experimenting and have had luck with the following:

Pioneer DVR-108 with latest update (ver 1.20)
Used CloneCD (latest Version) (could not get Alcohol to work consistently) The newer version amplifies "weak sectors"
Switched from Phillips cds to TDKs This made a BIG difference!
Copy disk at 4X using "game Mode"
Been using the back-up for several days appears to work well.

Great, thanks for that info, captret. Is "Game Mode" different than specifying "SafeDisc 2"? (I'm not in front of my co-worker's PC, so I can't test it out right now.)

I have a Pioneer DVR-108 myself (didn't know there was 1.20 firmware out, thanks ... lol ) but it's at home on my Mac ... and there's no programs for the Mac like Alcohol 120% or CloneCD to copy copy-protected discs

Here's the link for the firmware update:

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/compute...R_108FW120.zip,

I'm not sure if selecting copy "game disk" in CloneCD is the same as Safedisk 2/3 in Alcohol 120%. I'll try it again this week.

Good Luck!

if anyone buys a complete (Jan/2005) CD set, you could probably part it out and recoop most if not all of your $$$.
I for one would buy the (01/2005) California CD for some $$$.

Hehe, I need the California disc too... if anyone needs any of the other ones, I'd be willing to split the cost and mail you the discs.

My experience making backup copies

In backing up my CD's I found that last year's 1/04 version backed up just fine using Alcohol 120% using Safedisc 2/3 settings.

This did not work for the newer 1/05 CD's, however. I finally succeeded using CloneCD using "game protected CD" setting. Set for fast error skip using hardware. Also, I had to enable amplification of weak sectors (not emulate). After making these settings, I made images of all 10 CD's and made copies that worked perfectly in my '03 S500. I found the '05 program much more sensitive to backup copies than the prior year's version. I'm only making these copies to preserve the original disks, and I'm sure glad I did it last year as I ruined the backup copy of CD 9 (my area) by handling it too much.

p.s. I have images of all 10 CD's but am not interested in sharing.

Amplification of Weak Sectors - How to Enable?

I tried to use CloneCD, but "Amplification of Weak Sectors" is disabled in the US version. How did you manage to enable it?

It is removed from the tools/settings, but it is still there sorta hidden. If you right click on the profile selected you will see another set of options including amplify weak sectors. You can also right click on the drive selected during the read/write process to set the options. Alternatively, download this CD Backup Guide and read the chapter "Making Profiles in CloneCD".
You can download profiles from that site, too, although I didn't do that. Good luck in making your backups.

Still Can't Amplify Weak Sectors

Citation4444,
I've tried your suggestions, but they don't seem to get me to where I need to go. Is it possible the new CloneCD version doesn't work the same way? If it does, could you please post more specific information. Also, the link didn't get me to the guide.
Thanks in advance.

I really want to get a update as well but dont want to pay 300 some for the whole country. Just need california.

I went to the MB website where they have the nav subscription and they have the 1 cd option but no one knows how to order it. I spoke to the dealer they bounced me around to sales and even navtech. Navtech will not sell anything, you need to go through the dealer.

does Anyone else think this is stupid? Why do I have to buy the whole set when I need one. first off they are charging more than a hundred for a cd that costs less than 15 cents.

Anyway guys if you have found an alternate way of just buying one cd from the dealer or used please reply, thanks. Sunny

I would be willing to buy the whole set of 01/05 release if I can get somebody elso to buy the CD's that I don't need. I would only need disc #7,#8 and #9. 30.00 plus shipping for any other discs... This way we can all get just what we want and not stuck with worthless CD's. What say ye?
