Question Question re: Bluetooth Car-Kit Install

I had some work done on my new E55 at AI Design in NY. I had them do a very cool stealth radar detector install (you can see the display here ) & an install of the Parrot CK-3100 car kit.

I am thrilled with the radar detector install, but less than thrilled with the Parrot install. They did a nice clean installation in the ash tray, which is great. But, it's missing three pieces of functionality that I expected:
1) It uses its own microphone.
2) It uses its own speaker.
3) It doesn't mute the audio system.

I asked them about this & they said it was not feasible to use my car's speakers & microphone (or mute) because of the fiber the MB uses. At first, I believed them, but now I'm suspicious.

Can anyone confirm whether it is possible to tie into these functions without a ton of work?

Every Mercedes since 2000 has a mute and the only reason I dont go back further is that I didnt check. They are just laying it on with a shovel. It is simply one of the pins in the back of the head unit.

no wonder they ran away, you need special connectors to do some cars. Or at the very least, in an SL you need to remove the passenger seat to locate the mute wire from the cars wiring system.

The cars speaker can only be used if a) there is no BOSE ... (not much BOSE in AU). b) the MUTE is working.

The microphone can never be used unless it can operate in the same way (as the MB microphone takes a power supply to it).

Apart from that it should be like any other non-Mercedes phone kit install. Who knows which fuses they used and where the installer fuses are !

If you do a search, you will find information on the correct pin in the trunk-mounted AGW to connect the audio mute wire to. You can use the Teleaid speakers for your phone if you aren't using them for Teleaid. I've also heard that the MB microphone can be used for an aftermarket phone system but I haven't tried that yet.

A few follow up questions:

1) What is AGW?
2) Are you saying that the mute wire is consistent regardless of model, year, etc.?
3) What do you mean by "... can use the Teleaid speakers for your phone if you aren't using them for Teleaid." I'm assuming you mean that by using these speakers you need to disable them for use by Teleaid. Correct?
4) What about using the audio speakers?

1) What is AGW?
The AGW is the Audio Gateway. Since you mentioned you have a new E55, I assume you have a W211. The AGW is behind the left trunk liner
2) Are you saying that the mute wire is consistent regardless of model, year, etc.?
I believe that all W211's have the same type of AGW, regardless if you have the stock audio system or the HK system. As I remember, the mute wire is pin #1 on the connector.
3) What do you mean by "... can use the Teleaid speakers for your phone if you aren't using them for Teleaid." I'm assuming you mean that by using these speakers you need to disable them for use by Teleaid. Correct?
Yes.
4) What about using the audio speakers? This can also be done.

Can you provide any hints/info on using the audio speakers?

I didn't want to disturb my car's audio system (other than the mute function) so I didn't try to integrate it with the bluetooth phone system. However, a competent and experienced audio shop should be able to do this (at a price).

Talking Answer re: Bluetooth Car-Kit Install

I started this thread a few weeks ago trying to find out whether my Parrot CK-3100 Bluetooth Car Kit could be installed in a moire integrated manner (see original post for details). I also posted on several other MB audio forums. The answers ranged from: "Can't be done." to "It's easy to do."

I continued my research & got a reference to a guy who runs an audio shop who gets lots of work from a MB dealer in his area. He said he thought he could get 90% of the integration I wanted. I dropped the car off today & picked it up a few hours ago.

I'm very pleased with the job he did:
1) The MUTE function works perfectly. When the phone rings or is otherwise in use, the audio mutes.
2) The kit uses my left front speaker. Much better than the speaker that comes with the Parrot.

He didn't recommend trying to use the car's built-in microphone. He said that the Parrot mike is carefully tuned to sound good. Swicthing mikes would lead to bad sound quality for the other end of my calls.

Oh, yeah ... this guy also installed Sirius satellite radio even though my car was not prewired for it. Works like a charm.

If you're anywhere near central NJ & looking for a good place to get electronic work done, I recommend him highly. Drope me a note & I'll give you his contact info.

Congratulations on getting the installation that you wanted. I too wish that I could find someone (non dealer) who is willing to install a bluetooth based phone system into my car in Orlando. It's difficult to even know where to start.

There's got to be someone there who will/can do this for you. How about calling some audio installers & asking whether they're familiar with MB audio systems? If they say yes, you can ask for references.
