Geez, can't a North Carolina raised redneck get a chance at the impossible?

Yes, the face on the W164 and the W163 are "different", but I will either make this retrofit work or die trying!

I have a jigsaw and roll of duct tape in hand, may I please have the pinouts?

Kind regards,
Buddy

Yeah, I know the cd changer in the 99 ML320 is connected via copper (not fiber). So I've already come to terms with not being able to use the existing cd changer.

I do not plan to use the steering wheel controls either (of course). Will the radio be adversely affected or operate improperly because the D2B/MOST are not being used?

Primary goals for this project in order of priority:
- Pleasant Physical appearance (this should be fun)
- FM/AM/Internal CD
- Satellite Radio (are you Sirius?)
- Internal DVD Navigation, external GPS antenna

Wannabe goals, if possible:
- Bluetooth
- Treo650 Phone Intergration
- World Peace

Is it possible to achieve the primary goals?

Sorry for the humor, just trying to keep it light,
Buddy

IF you want to hack the dash and install it then you can. Can't gurantee it will work. It would be better if you buy the harness with the correct connectors on it instead of making your own. You can use satellite radio with it as well but you will need a length of fiber cable.

I am up for purchasing the correct harnesses/connectors. After searching the web I have not been able to find any harnesses specific to the A164.

It looks like the connectors on the back of the A164 are different from the connectors on the back of the A163. That's why I was requesting the pinout, becuase I figured I could possibly match-up the A164 pinout with the A163 pinout that I found in one of the threads on MBWorld.

Also, the A164 I bought is used (of course) and I would like to test it before taking a blow-torch/hacksaw/dremel/ax to my dash, which is another reason that I was trying to figure out the power and speaker pins.

In all seriousness, my ML is in excellent condition and I hope to keep it that way. Any suggestions on where to find the harnesses and testing pinouts are greatly appreciated.

If anyone has knows the pins for power and speakers on the A164 Comand, please send it to me.

The unit needs to be tested before I can make a final decision whether or not I want to pursue this project.

Thanks,
Buddy

I presume that you are aware of the fact that that comand on the picture does NOT have a navigation drive? The nav drive in the ML350s is optional and the one on the picture is one of those without the nav drive.

You can buy an adapter harness from mercedes if you think your jigsaw skills are good enough to give it a try...203 540 83 08

Your presumption is accurate. I assume it will take more than the singe wire harness to install the unit, but also do not yet have it in-hand.

Thanks for providing initial direction on what seems to be a useless task.

greetingz,

The Mecedes dealership in my area (Virginia, USA) does not see that part number as a valid part number.

I have hear of Euro parts that are not ordered by American dealers. Is part number 203 540 83 08 considered a Euro part? Do you have any suggestons on where it can be bought?

you don't have a wiring harness ISSUE - you need the adaptercable (as posted above).

As all US spec 203s and up come with factory installed radio - that part most probably is NOT available in the US...look for it on german ebay - it will be PLUG AND PLAY with that harness (so you can always go back easily once/when/if the install doesn't work out too well).

Uncle!

I am conceding defeat....

When it came down to modifying the dash, I did not want to test my hacksaw skills.

But, I do enjoy a good challenge and have begun evaluating the installation of a 2005 COMAND (A 163 820 05 79). Yes, I realize that there are probably significant wiring and fiber opitic compatibility issues.

Thanks to everyone that provided guidance,
Buddy

FOR SALE

Cable harness A2035408308
Converter A2118200088

These are the cables that are mentioned above needed to convert to the newer wiring
Both of these are brand new original Mercedes Benz parts. I actually had to create a BIN through my dealership to get these here beacuse they are not available to the US..the reason for sale is I have a 2005+ C-class which already has the new wiring..I ordered these by mistake

Please PM me for photos and price

Thank you All
