Ipod volume problem

As I mentioned in another thread, the dealer-installed Ipod kit in my E500 wagon doesn't work very well. The main problem is that the volume needs to be cranked RIGHT UP when using ipod. Am I doing something wrong? Is this fixable?

TIA

I agree with the search advice - it has been written up. Problem, if I recall, is with the input jack used in the iPod kit. Replacing the jack may fix the problem. I don't recall all the details.

Thanks guys. I did the search properly this time and it seems there is no easy fix - other than a DIY project that is beyond my ability (and the dealers, I suspect). I'll ask the dealer if they can fix it (without much expectation that they can) and try for a refund (fat chance!). Not a good investment, this accessory.

Replacing the jack should be simple - likely any decent car audio shop could do it inexpensively.

Good idea. I'll try the dealer first. I already have the headphone cable, so I'll I need is for someone to remove the COMAND unit, replug the AUX connector, refit the COMAND and see how it goes.

One thing that worries me with this fix is whether using the headphone jack to increase volume levels will compromise sound quality. It seems logical that the headphone jack will be set up for headphone sound and won't have the sound quality of the docking jack currently used by the ipod kit. Any thoughts on this?

I solved much of this complaint by setting the volume adjustment in iTunes up two notches. 40%. It does not affect the sound quality when the iPod is used outside the car, and gives a nice boost to the volume when docked in the car. I also don't use the EQ settings, which MB recommends.

Dealer has agreed to try the headphone jack mod for me on Monday. Things are looking up.

I am really glad to hear this.. When I discovered this was the best fix, I presented this idea to my dealer and they were scared to do it So I did it myself and WOW!!!

You will be very happy with the outcome. Just plug your ipod into the audio jack but preset the volume to full before you plug in the interface as you will not be able to manually control the Ipod volume afterwards unless you unplug the interface.

I have done this on 3 cars already. This is the only way to go with this kit.

I took it to the dealer as planned and the tech wasn't keen on the fix as suggested here. He did a search for updates and found a new controller has been specified. He suggested ordering that under warranty which I was happy with. He said it will fix the problem. I'll update with any progress.

Hmm Interesting..

I actually tried a new controller that had a different part number but when I compared them, they were the same..

Guys just do the headphone MOD, I did it myself, here is my post...

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...eekend+project

The dealers never want to do anything outside of the book, I had my dealer do this to my friends CLS installation without any issues, they are simply using a different source for audio, thats it.

Has anyone done this fix on a 2005 W203 (C55)?? Thanks my06clk for the PM and link. I attempted the fix, and have what I think is the connection on the back of the MCSII Comand (4 pin), but there is no unused wire from my iPod install or otherwise.

The best I can tell is the AUX connection is combined into the main harness to the audio.

I'm wondering if I connect the AUX wire, and cut one of the two leads of the iPod connector. My guess is one is control and power, and the other sound.
