Hello everybody,

Need your advise !

I have MB B250, 2014 year with 67000 KM millage. I have Power Steering Malfunction problem ( 3000 CAD+ TAX) . As my car out of warranty already 7 months, they refuse to repair or replace it free of charge. Now Service Manager start negotiation with Goodwill.

Same issue and same massive bill

Hi Kamil,

What were you able to work out with the dealership? I'm exactly the same circumstance only they want $4,000 to fix it. An insane amount of money for a single part.

Would be interested to see what you where able to negotiate...

The dealership says the "C159362 The torque sensor of the power steering has a malfunction" and as it's not a serviceable part, I have to change the whole rack...
So basically the electric steering doesn't work (or more accurately, works sometimes).

You haven't noted what the symptoms are. Thats how people can help you.

There is quite a bit of information on youtube regarding this fault. I'd be looking there and then finding a power streering specialist in your area. At least then you'll know if you have to deal with the dealership or if there are alternatives.

Sorry, there are no symptoms. It just stopped working. Was not having any issues with it at all.
The display on the dash just said "Power Steering Malfunction: See Owners Manual".

After watching some of the videos, now wondering if it could be a bad wire as the failure was sudden (and the EPS units are pretty reliable)

Dealership shared this:
"Found message on cluster "Power steering malfunction", connect xentry and battery charger, found current fault code on electrical power steering control unit "C159362 The torque sensor of the power steering has a malfunction", performed tests as per xentry, raised vehicle, check wire between torque steer sensor and electric power steering - OK, disconnect connectors and checked for signs of pin damage or corrosion - OK, requires replacement of the electric steering rack, p/a sent out, fault could not be erased, vehicle has no power steering."

And for YouTube videos, here's all I could find:
1)
2)
3)
4)

Going to my my independent German Import garage take a look. Something seems off here...

Any other thoughts of wisdom?

Wish I could tell you more. I'm always suspicious when MB just say a very expensive component needs changing, only to find there are cheaper solutions. Problem with the B series is that there aren't many around and on this forum to find evidence. Search in other forums and see what you find. Might also be worth looking at Benzworld forum.

There is a recall in Canada for the power steering control module for 2013-2019 B250's and others. Recall Campaign: 2021060002

"As a precautionary measure, Mercedes-Benz AG, via its Mercedes-Benz service partners, will replace the power steering control unit on the affected vehicles."

The Mercedes Benz Canada website has a page where you can enter your VIN and see your completed or incomplete recalls. Just google it.

You might get lucky and have the dealer fix it for free, I have one that just died and it's going to the dealer for this recall. I have to wonder what they will do, if after replacing the control module the power steering still doesn't work.

I'll report back on what happened.

-Sean

Hi Kamil,
I have the same issue with my car. Torque sensor unserviceable. Over 4K to replace steering rack with no guarantee it will fix problem. Service manager told me to do some research. Insinuated there could be a cheaper fix somewhere else. Did you find an alternative solution?

Ok I am reporting in on the recall attempt. Sadly, the result is about what anyone would expect. The closest dealer is several hours away and of course damn near incompetent so it was a total clusterfk. Long story short, the car went in and supposedly had the control unit replaced. A couple hours into the drive home the power steering quit. Now the power steering is intermittent. They took it back to the dealer and now the dealer is saying it's the torque sensor and the whole steering rack has to be replaced. $4000 for the steering rack and $1,000 labour, a bargain

I'm going to remove the rack and get into that sensor and see what's going on. I can find almost no information on the internet about this problem. The sensor itself seems to be unobtainable. I will report back some day with my findings.
