1995 C220 Radio & Casette Holder
Hello everyone,
I have been reading each post intently and I have been on the phone with New Jersey and Toronto Canada trying to find someone who will help me with my questions.
1. What is the model number of the radio in my car. It is the OEM radio from Mercedes. I am driving a 1995 C220. Nowhere in my documentation does it list the model number of the radio.
I need to know this because I want to put a cd changer in my car but I am being asked the model number at each store. I have gone to 4 stores so far and each salesperson has told me something different.
"You can only install a Mercedes cd changer in a Mercedes"
"We can install a cd changer for you but it will be FM Modulated"
"We can install an Alpine cd changer but you need an adapter"
"We can't because the 1995 is too old of a model."
I'm exasperated.
2. I also want to purchase a replacement for the cassette holder in my Mercedes. There is this space that holds 6 cassettes and I read on here that one could order a tray that will replace the cassette holders. However, when I called the Mercedes dealership today, they told me that that particular part was only in Germany.
Can someone help!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

Actually, it's quite easy to install the changer yourself. You can call Crutchfield, and they have two changers that will work with your car:
USA SPEC SCD-A88M (US$300)
Alpine CHM-S630 and a PIE MBZ-ALP (US$250)
(The USA Spec one is an Alpine.)
I think there should be no problems ordering to Canada.
If you get these changers, the cable to hook it up is already in your trunk. All you do is find a spot to stick the changer, screw it down (if you'd like), and plug in the one cable.
If you do end up ordering from Crutchfield, I'd appreciate it if you used my referral code: px7ja-qrxvq-rzc8v
Also, if you do want the storage space under the radio like in tp's picture above, it's part number A202 683 00 91. If you replace your cassette holder, I'd like to buy it from you.
Good luck!

I agree that Crutchfield is a good source of info on the changer. Sometimes, after you get a model number from them, you might find it locally for less, or at least save the shipping or have it quicker. You can also try the manufacturer's websites (Alpine, etc.) for more info, but there are definately changers out there by Alpine and another brand or 2 that are designed to work with your stock MB radio.
Regarding the box, I got mine from Auto Stiegler MB in Encino, CA (part of LA) for $18 us. They had to order it for me, but it only took 2 or 3 days to come in. Not sure why it sould be any different in Canada, except of course for the exchange rate. Try another MB dealer to see if their story is the same.

By the way-
If you still need the model number of the radio, I can have a look at mine. It should be the same as yours, as it's from my '95 C280. It's in a box in my closet, since I had it replaced with an Alpine single-disk player. Should be easier for me to look at that for you to take yours out. Let me know.

Thank you
Yes please look for me. I would really appreciate it because no radio company is willing to touch my radio unless I buy the changer from their store (smart I guess).
I am so glad I found this website. You guys are great. I really appreciate all the help and education.
Take it easy and enjoy your Mercedes. ;-)

A 003 820 51 86
Model No. CM2294
It is made in Japan. By the way, my car came with the Bose system. I've attached a picture of the radio, just to be sure it's the same as yours.
Best Success!

The 1995 C220 came with a factory installed Alpine CM-2296, or if you have the CD ready head the CM-2297.
In 1996 they moved to the CM-2396. The CM-2396 head is factory ready to suppot many of the CHM-S6xx model CD Changers. Factory CD Unit is the CHM-S620, give or take, depending on the year.
I have a used CM-2396 that is not currently functioning. It appears to need a new display. Anybody who wants it, is more than welcome to it.

you can use these Alpine CD-Changer models:
CHM-S601, -S611, -S620 and all 59xxer models
You can also use CHA-S604 but you will need an AI-NET-Cabel KCA-130B from Alpine. You can't connect to CHM-S605 and -S607!
that's for the Mercedes "special" and "Exquisit" but not for later radio models!
