2000 C280 has intemittent starting problems. Please Help in Diag

Hi all, my 2000 C280 is not starting and I need advice / help on the diagnosis and repair. IT will run but not restart. If I wait anywhere between 5 - 15 min the car will start and run between 2 minutes and 1 hour. I am considering the fuel pump and filter but these were replaced 11/07. I have my doubts that this could be the problem but I wont completely rule it out.
Is it unusual for a fuel pump to die in 12 months? I would like to check the system out. Where do you test for fuel pressure on these cars? Also could this be the Crank position sensor or is that a different set of symptoms ? I am looking for advice / procedures or other related devices that could cause this. Currently I have pulled the codes with a hand scanner and there is nothing stored or reported in the system.

Please advise

Thank you in advance

Rob

sounds like the crank sensor... thet act up mainly when hot. just remove the sensor and bench test it to see if it is a open curcuit or very high resistance. use alittle heat from a heat gun to duplicate conditions

One of these times it is just going to stop and not start. I believe all the problem is the CPS. Easy job just need a CPS and a E8 socket, best to do this with a 1/4 drive and a good mirror(small) so you can see the bolt. There are threads on this if you do a search on this here. I just did mine and it took maybe 25min statr to finish.

i have a 2000 C280 and my problem seems to occur after a cold night. The engine will turn but won't start. One day the car will start fine and run for a day or two, then the next day it won't start again. Right now I have a full tank and battery seems to be ok. Everything in the car powers, nothing dim. I read a lot about it possibly being a problem with the CPS, but my car never stalled out while driving it. Could the Crank Position Sensor also affect starting of the car even if it drives fine without stalls?

yes it's the CPS.. at first my car wouldn't start but I'd wait 5 mins and then it would and it was running fine without stalling.. then it started stalling when I would stop at an intersection or stop sign.. then one day I had to wait half an hour before the car started.. then it started stalling while I was driving.. CPS!

with no codes, it could be a problem related to the gas you use (the blend from the refinery) and cold weather.

Interesting piece of info, apparently the BP station on Olympic and Robertson does not use ethanol, at least it is not listed on the pumps.

Sorry for not keeping up with this thread but for all of those who have a similar issue the problem was indeed the CPS sensor.

Thanks to all who helped.

That's interesting. My 2000 C280 failed on Sunday, and won't ever start again. It stalled on traffic lights, restarted and ran for half a mile, then did not respond. Stopped it and it won't start ever again. Could this also be CPS? We checked and saw that fuel is pumped without a problem. Injectors should be in pristine condition, replaced them 5k ago.

Thanks a lot.

My car did this once and this was at a time when i was fitting my car with a weapon r short ram intake it stalled out on me on my way to a driver improvment class. i pushed the car into a parking lot and sat there and it eventually started.
