C280 engine stops while driving. Help me figure out whats wrong

hi,

I have a MY2000 C280 with 80k miles. It started giving me problems last month. I had trouble starting the engine on several times in the last month. The engine stoped running while I was driving it 2 times in last few days. No check engine or any warning light is on then all of them go off and engine stops. I have a second car which I am using now and afraid to take the benz to any mechanic because I know its going to cost me a fortune. can any of you estimate how much this is going to cost me? and what the problem is?

I dont drive the car very often. I am the second owner I have had it for years. It had been serviced very well up until last year.

thanks

maybe its a feul pump? or another issue related to a lack of fuel flow? How long does it run before it happens?

thats what I thougt too. It runs for 10-15 mins. I noticed it stops when my foot is not on gas pedal(while slowing down or at complete halt). I stop at a red light and engine stops then it takes at least a min to start again(usually 5-6 tries). spark plugs and ignition wires have 10k miles on them so i dont think its ignition problem. it could be ecu related too. how much a fuel pump would cost me? part+labor?

but then again if the fuel pump is failing, wouldnt i get a check engine warning?

Hmmm. Then it could be a timing chain issue. But it couldn't hurt to try resetting the ECU. https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...set-works.html This thread has a how-to. It's pretty simple to do.

I once had some issues where my car would do very jumpy shifts at high rpms. So I reset the ECU and problem solved.

Fuel pumps aren't so cheap. http://www.buymbparts.com/ShopByVehi...l+Pump&mode=PA

That site is pretty good. However, I would at least go somewhere for a diagnostic. The problem could be related to many things. Perhaps the engine isn't idling high enough.

Start with an ECU reset and let me know what happens.

Have you scanned for codes at Autozone or similar? Have you investigated the crankshaft position sensor? Often this does not store a code, so code scanning may not indicate this specific issue. If it starts fine when cool and then cuts out after the engine warms up or a warmed up car sits for a bit while you run into the store, these are classic symptoms.

when it first started giving me this problem it was just like that. i started fine when cold then if i stop somewhere for less than an hour it didnt start again(eventually starts after 10-15 tries). a few days ago i was driving home at 45-50mph then i let my foot off the gas pedal to slow down but not the brake. suddenly all the light on dashboard went off and the engine stopped(this was again 10 mins after i started driving) i tried to start it 4-5 times and it started. yesterday i was driving to work i stopped at the red light and the engine stopped, did start again after 3-4 tries.

My 1st thought is the CPS(crank pos sensor) they go bad pretty often and it seems like that is your culprit. My 1st would be to replace that It's a simple DIY job.

I agree. Look at the crankshaft position sensor first. Also what is your gas gauge saying? The reason I ask is this happened to me, and it turned out to be the wiring to the fuel pump. It was laying on one of the rear axles and slowly melted. My gas gauge was not reading correctly and I was running out of gas before the gauge would tell me.
Good Luck.

I got mine from the local Benz shop. Its on the back of the engine block (left side) Only one bolt. Should be easy. I cant find it now, but I did do a Google search and found a Pic.
Good Luck
