Engine Idle Problem

Engine Idle Problem
New to community guys, quick problem I have with my 1995 C280.
When i cold start(sometimes just starting period) the car the engine rev's up kinda high, then when it idles the rpm's drop down really low and after say 30 seconds the engine dies. Sometimes it requires me to start the car 3-4 times before it starts idling correctly. The engine dies sometimes in reverse if its not warmed up. Another thing I'd like to note is that the engine has never died at a stop light idling, or whenever the car is in drive. Its always just whenever I start the car and try to warm up the engine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When did the problem start? All of a sudden or progressively?
Is your check engine light on?
How many miles on the car?
What I think it could be:
MAF sensor: When did you last replace the MAF sensor?
Intake tube: Is the intake tube (the rubber tube that uses metal snaps to connect the airbox to the intake, does it have any breaks or leaks? Have you rechecked to make sure that it's connected correctly?

This problem has been existant for over a year. Its been like that since I bought the car and previous owner has the same problem. Car has 280 K miles on it. Rebuilt engine and tranny at 200K. Check engine light is not on, although I have seen it on before in the past year it doesn't stay on though. Anyways I will check MAS today in a bit, I don't know when the last time it was replaced. Thanks for the quick response.

It could be related to the idle control valve, but not for sure since it idles fine when the car is in drive gear. I assume you have done all the basic maintenance: air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs.
