Getting a bit more power from a 1998 C280

Hello, I'm a new member. and I have a few questions...

I'd like to get some more HP from my engine without going overboard (not yet). I'm really only looking to get about 20hp to make my car a little quicker. I've research a few simple, inexpense mods (compared to a SC) I'd like your input on these mods:

1) Evosport Underdrive Pully(s)

2) K/N filter (or other)

3) different intake/ cold air intake ?

4) Exhaust mods (free flow cat, free flow resinator, etc).

5) use of 93 octane fuel (computer setting or chip ?)

My car has 2 years left on its starmark warranty...so tell me if some modifications would void my warranty. Something like a cold air intake I could swap out before my car goes into the shop, but something like a "chip" could pose a problem. The pully(s), I'd hope, would go undetected...and I'm hoping an Exhaust mod would be ok (maybe I should buy AMG parts ? )

(I think I should have posted this under engine performance...any way to move it ?)

Thanks,

K&N filter will give you about 1 horsepower. You already have a cold air intake. I think messing with the catalytic converter would indeed void the warranty. You may want to check with the dealer though. As far as this 93 octane thing goes, if anyone knows about this please post in soon!!! Welcome to the forum by the way.

speaking of gas, i noticed a sharp drop in gas today (after all that mess in iraq). 1.89 a gallon of premium 93 octane at cheveron. it was 2.00+ something a few days ago.

how much are you guys paying?

I have several of these installed in my 2000 C280 and there is not that much difference. I have installed the Evosport pullies, K&N air filter, Remus exhaust, 18 inch SSR GT3 rims, Bridgestone S-03, Power Slot rear rotors, front EBC rotors, front EBC green brake pads. The car speeds up a little faster, mostly because of the pullies. I'm planing into installing a NOS 50 HP bottle. First though of installing a turbo system but too much problem involved and way too expensive (not worth it!)

well, in Hong Kong we use 98 octane gas. so the hp of our C280 is around 204hp. according to the spec.

i've tried K&N filter and i found it's good. i mean the feeling of the gas pedal but i think it won't give U extra hp!!? perhaps?? but now, back to OEM.

about the exhaust, i'm using Sebring and what i can say is... it makes the torque curve better. dunno whether it increase the hp or not. but worth to try!! Ah!!! Deep sound also

about the pullies, well i wanna know more about this. i know it works well on the Kompressor but how about the NA??
any idea??

for the NOS, it's illegal in HK. and i've heard there are numbers of "side-effects"!!! perhaps it needs some tricks to tune it!!?

one more thing i've tried, that is the FSE fuel pressure regulator. it's popular in Europe esp. England. it's an adjustable pressure regulator but...
quite a strange stuff!!!
if U decrease the fuel pressure, sure U can have GOOD pick-up coz' the "air" is more than the "gas" but it'll cause another problem... that is the high-end drops!!! and the fuel is also a cooling "agent". so the engine will be a bit too hot.
if U increase the pressure, your pick-up will be slower but the high-end will be GOOD!!!
but... it'll mess up the original programme of your car's computer because it'll always get a poor calculation and at last the computer will switch to the "preset" mode and ALL the variables will be cut and just do the preset "Maths" !!! sorry!! so hard to explain. so i took it away!!!
the reason why i found this is because i've got one and i've done numbers of "experiments" and i know some technicians who work in the Mercedes-Benz repair and maintainance centre. they fixed a lot of mod. Benz!!! now, switch back to the original "Bosch" stuff.
i think the best way to mod a C280 is to improve its handling, say, the suspension, sway bars and the braking system. still it can't bit a Bimmer for the same class in terms of handling.

I'm in northern VA...about 15 mins outside of DC.

All good schools...what's your major ?

They don't have 93 in CA (I think). But our cars are set to run on 91 (like the CA cars)...so if there was 93 octane setting, we could get a little more power, for no extra cost.

octane and boosters

We get anywhere from 91 to 93 out here in west Texas. I usually use 91 at Texaco (it's around a $1.74 out here). I was wondering, Mercedes-Benz says that you shouldn't use fuel additives. Can you use stuff like octane booster and fuel injector cleaner in C 280's? I'm not a preacher of the benefits of these additives and I'm not dumb enough to believe that a bottle can make your car a race car, but I like the extra gas pedal feel Outlaw used to give me in my previous car. I don't abuse them either. I used to use octane booster about once a month and fuel injector clearner every 5k or so.

I use the bg44 (something like that) fuel injector cleaner just to keep the ports clean. I don't know of any car manufacturers that recommend fuel injector cleaner.

about those additives, most of the time they are added in the gas during the processing stage. in such a case, i think U may save your $$ for other purpose indeed!! frequently change your fuel filter would be a better choice to keep your fuel system healthy

Thanks man I apprecite the advice. I ran nothing but premium gas in my MAXIMA and still used fuel additives, I was young what can I tell ya? All I really wanted to know was whether it was safe to use them in an MB that's all.

free or pretty cheap mod would be to gut out your precats you have 2 of them. you will see them they are an extra bulge (bigger looking pipe then normal exhaust) but i would recommend just cutting out and replacing with a piece of pipe. NO o2 sensors before/after, and you still have the main cat so emissions will be fine.
cost 70ish$ max
