Programming the Keyless Entry Remote
Programming the Keyless Entry Remote
Does anyone know how or where to find instructions on re-programming a keyless remote?
I would like to buy one off of e-bay, but want to be sure I can reprogram it first.
Thanks.............quick

I'm not sure if htis is what you want, but when you replace hte batteries you have to reprogram the keyless remote entry. So if you get a new key it should be the same.
But to program a key... you put the key into the accessory mode (ii) then you point your key at the reciever (rear view mirror) and hold down the button for about 3 or 10 seconds? This is a rough idea of what you have to do, check your owner's manual for a more detailed instruction.
BTW this is for a 96 C220, so I'm not sure if it's differnet if you have a newer one then the 96. My key only has one button unlike the newer MBs that have 2 buttons.

Re-programing remote
I do not think that a remote from on MB can be re-programed to work in another like garrage door openers can. They are factory set, and I do not think that can be changed. To get a remote that works, you need to take proof of ownership (Title/registration) to a MB dealer parts dept and they order one for you.
Remotes from 1995 to 1997 were infra-red that work only close to the car. 95-96 only had one receiver by the rear view mirror and in bright sun light you might have to put the remote almost on the glass to get the remote to work. 97 added receivers by the rear trunk and drivers door so that the IR remote worked much better, but still not more than 6-10 feet (2 meters) in bright sun light.
98 and beyond used Radio Frequency (and IR in combination in some earlyer systems I believe) remotes that will work from many car lengths away.
good luck.

C230K Remote
Hi,
Just purchased a 2003 C230K sedan, and unfortunately only got 1 Key.
I want to get two more sets made, but my dealership said it costs 160 per key, yikes!
So I saw on ebay that there are many fobs for sale. Mine is the 3 button key with the panic button. Does Anyone know how compatible these keys are across different models? The FCC ID is IYZ 3312, on my one key. One dealership I called said they do not accept old fobs because the electronics can be screwed up from the fob, and a second dealership said they would take a look.
Does anyone know the real deal with programming and using fobs from a different vehicle. I hate to spend so much when I dont have too.
thanks! :p

you guys should try a tech forum; my 280 manual says after changing batteries, just put key in ignition. I've read in tech forums that there are only 8 (max) keys for each car, then you have to car re-keyed....(big dough)

kaldera if you baught your car brand new then go to your salesman adn demand for another key and a valet key. As far as reprogramming go, i believe it must be done at the dealership. good luck
If you buy used SmartKeys on e-bay you have nothing more than an interesting trinket. The 1998+ keys are produced specific to the car and cannot be "reprogrammed" by the dealer, or by anyone, to match up to a new car.
If you don't believe me (most people don't) go ahead and buy some keys and try it.
