cel on, "fuel bank malf": MAF?
Do we think that the MAF is the likely culptit for the CEL (gas cap is tight)? If so, doesn't $288.18 sound high for the part?

288 isn't bad. The cheapest I saw was $196 shipped (from importec.com) before... but they are out of stock. But those online sites range between 196-235. That's for my '99 C280 that is, not sure about the others.
And YES... I'd put my money on the MAS.
The d(st)ealership changed it on a friend's '99 CLK and they charged him $890 parts and labor. Talk about rip, labor is like 5 min.
Good Luck,

i know pep boys on the west coast will allow you to borrow their obdc or odbc reader to get a read out (sometimes they'll actually do it for you) and you can call your mercedes dealer to decipher it for you. just in case you want to check it out first. good luck!

Online sites like:
importec.com
bimmerzone.com
thepartsbin.com
They all get their parts from WorldPac. WorldPac sells to the mechanic shops wholesale, for us they mark it up on average 33% from what your local mechanic gets it for. My quote for $196 for mas is shipped and no tax.
Depending on parts, but for MAS meter, they are OEM parts coming from those online sites. Brakes pads for example you have many choices.
Try cleaning the mass out (find it in the archives). Cause if it's dead, you gotta replace it anyways, so not much risk.

$288 is importecparts.com, $305 is BuyMBparts.com. I'm bidding on one on ebay...I just tried one that my mechanic gave me, but it was from an ML class, and it failed big-time in about 10 minutes!

I printed out the detailed cleaning instructions (simply green, alcohol)... I'm a little afraid to do it in the driveway, in case I mess it up completely!

It's only $280.92 shipped from bimmerzone.com So you'll save $8 compared to importec.
Today (5/7/04) is the last day for free shipping from them w/ purchase of more than $99.

$280 still seems like a lot of money, giving that I'm guessing that it's the fix. The car seems to be running fine, so I think I'll take a chance with the one on ebay, part no. 112-094-00-48; hopefully it's the right one for a C280.

Call the d(st)ealership and find out if that is indeed the part number for your 2000 C280.
Or ask a fellow 2000 C280 member to check what is the part number of their mass under their hood.
It's a GREAT price on eBay if it fits.
I do know the 94-97 were different engines compared to 98-00, and probably different mass meter. Hence I don't know why some of them advertise on eBay that it will fit 94-00 models. Double check and ask the seller if it doesn't fit on your model, will they refund it.
