Hi people.
I have a C180,4 cylinder manual transmission.I haven't used it for over a year and 3 days ago I had it checked and then drove it for a distance of over 400km.Apart from hard starting and irregular idling at first it drove like the machine it is.Yesterday I drove it for about 70km and everything was fine. But today when I started and left it to warm up a bit,I noticed the temp guage rising to about 87 C or so.I switched it off, waited for a while and tried again but same thing happened.I switched it off and called my mechanic who says its ok because its idling .I would lie to get a second opinion. At 87C I checked the coolant and it wasn't that hot coz I could dip my fingers in.is this car safe to drive?and the speedometer works when am going above 60,less than that its at 0,

Based on your observations I believe you have a sticky thermostat, however run the car around town--whats the temp??plus you have a faulty inst cluster---get both repaired!

not a merc
Dipping your finger in the coolant is not the temperature of the water at the thermostat, 90 deg is fine
