For those w/ 6 speed...

When my car is sitting at idle and either in gear (w/ clutch in) or in neutral (w/ clutch out), I feel a sort of knock/tap every 1/2 second or so through the shifter. You can't hear it or anything, and you can't feel it unless you place your hand on the shifter. I think it goes away when you accelerate. Is this normal? Is isn't as if there are any other manuals around my town to compare mine to

Also, does anyone else notice a BIG drag on the car's power w/ you turn on the A/C?

Yeah that shifter vibrates a little.....I feel it on mine too.

A/C robs a lot of power from the engine.......and you are gonna have to shift it at a higher RPM than normal. (Its only a 1.8L!) I usually cruse and drive around town in the RPM range in the 2500-3200RPM. Keeping the Supercharger close to maximum boost. I also have a drop in K&N filter that helps the engine breath easier.

I don't know if its just me....but I am getting better gas mileage, than if I were to use a higher gear and cruse around 2000RPM.

If you would have got the more expensive C240 or C320 6 speed, you wouldn't be feeling the knocking movement. Its that cheap C230 feel you are getting.

that seems kinda low to cruise no? i find myself cruising more in the 3200-3600 RPM range.

Banville, i haven't noticed the knock or what your talking about. i'll pay extra attention to that though next time i use my car and see if i can feel it.

haven't used the A/C yet

I don't have that problem w/ my '02 c240. The only thing I get is a vibration from the shifter. I just clutch in put in neutral then back in gear and it goes away. But it rarely happens.

Ok I'm normally a nice guy that can over look people’s ignorance, but you seem to show an above average hate toward the 230 and other C-class cars. Now, to my understanding you don’t even own a MB any more. Don't you have any thing better to do then to try and mock a car you don’t even own? I have seen you post in several threads derogatory things toward C-class's in general. If you don’t own a MB or have the intention of buying a MB then you don’t belong here on this forum.

With that said... can a MOD please ban this troll? He is bringing down this form with his uneducated and miss-informed information, as well as his hatred toward MB's.

Thank you

I love the 240 haters of the 230...does the 2 other cylinders make you feel like more of a man? Lol. There is a reason all the loaners are 240s...they are so slow everyone can handle them...they also sit on the lot because nobody wants to pay more for a slower car...lol. My 240 rental scared the hell out of me when I went to merge and the power wasn't there. No thank you, give me a rev happy engine any day.

I just drove the car "cold" and I didn't feel the tap/knock. Honestly, with my schedule and gas prices combined, my wife has been driving the 230 way more than me. I'll pay more attention and see if it comes back. I noticed it the other day while I had the A/C on. Maybe that had something to do with it?

I do notice a lot of vibration on the shifter if I keep my hand on it while driving but nothing unusual.
I seem to be getting higher gas mileage every day as the engine becomes more broken in, I used to get around 22 mpg, then 23, 24, 25, now 26 avg.

Crusing around 3200-3600RPM??!! Isn't that a little bit high? Only if I'm on the highway doing 90MPH(in 6th gear) or something. I was just talking about normal local cruse in 4th gear.

You know our engine redlines at 6000RPM right?

M271 is so quiet in mid and high rpm range, you just don't hear the engine working...lol but it sounds horrable in the lower rpm when it just getting warmed up....worest sound ever!

3200 to 3600 isnt too high, considering 80 mph on the highway in 6th hovers right above 3000 RPMs.

But yes, I cruise around town too in higher gears than neccassary keeping the RPMs around 2000.

ct230k
I average about 32 miles per gallon, but then again my commute to work is 30 miles.

yeah pretty much highway.

I take 195 from Storrs which I'll do 50 with some lights for 10 miles, and the remaining 20 miles are highway @ like 80+ mph.

The average speed for the trip is usually around 60 mph for 30 miles with a time of 30 minutes @ 32 mpg.

I drive practically ALL highway. I never reset the trip #2 setting in the car from when I bought it. I have something like 120 hours in the car with over 4000+ miles with an mpg of 29. Which isnt half bad.

During winter months I average around 22-24. With 70% Local and 30% highway.

Now that weather is reached the 60-80s my MPG went up to 28-32. Not bad at all!

My MPG on the onboard computer actually showed 34MPG one time. I was crusing at 65MPH in 6 gear for like 1 hour though. lol Driving me nuts~ Just want to see how fuel efficient my car really is...lol

Haha, yeah its pretty bad - I find myself trying all sorts of different things to improve gas milage.

I found that accelerating to a cruising speed somewhat quickly (like shifting around 3500 RPMs) seems to get better milage than slowly going to cruising speed... i.e. shifting around 2000 or lower.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get the best mileage in city driving though.

I have noticed the drop in power when you turn the A/C on, though mine is an auto, not a manual. It really got me worried, but, after playing with it, I noticed it only happens when you really try to cool down the cabin (less than 70 degrees). What worries me is the power is gone even if you turn off the A/C until you turn off the engine and restart the car. Has that happened to anyone else?

Even after you turn off A/C compressor, it continues to work for a few minutes.

You know, a C240 is an OK car. The engine is a bit underpowered. The rest of the car is nice. I feel bad having to slam it everytime time small ***** C240/Mazda "fucos" driver starts feeling so insecure he has to **** on the C230. But, yeah, its true, the C240 is always piling up on the lots. My dealer still has about8 new ones from 2004, and some unsold demos from 2003. How sad is that? Nobody buys this car at anywhere close to list price I guess.
