c320 steptronic shifting Q
i was at a stop, dropped it to 1 and put my foot down, prob not all the way, but hard, right before redline, i shifted to second, and the same thing from 2 to 3, but at 3500rpm it shifted to 4th by itself???? i though t i can take it to redline and then shift, and if i dont, then it shifts itself. thats how my w220 works alteast????

I use the TOUCH SHIFT function quite a bit on my C320's and never had it do that before (on either one). I think I'll go for a spirited drive later on, just to make sure !

i believe they all automatcially shift at redliine to prevent engine damage, not all cars do this (i dont think acuras do) but MB chose to go with this method (along with not shifting back down to 1st gear once you get to a stop) i personally dont like it very much but either, but i guess it's there for a reason

oh, well the transmission physically does, but the display telling you what gear you're in while in tip-tronic mode does not

05 C230 Sports Sedan, Previously owned an 02 C230 Sports Coupe
I've actually noticed a difference in the programming from my 2002 C230 Coupe to the new 2005 Sports Sedan.
At a stop sign in the coupe, I would actually have to tap the the shifter to the left several times to get down to 1st (or I'd have to hold the shifter to the left to allow it to automatically shift to 1st). Similarly, the same thing would happen at higher speeds, if the transmission were actually in 3rd, but the display read "D", I'd have to tap several times or hold the shifter to downshift to 2nd.
The new 2005 Sports Sedan appears to be programmed to always go to the lowest gear possible on the 1st tap. One quick tap takes it from "D" to "1" on the display at a stop sign.
Different programming I guess.

mine did it again, at a stop, took it to first, switched to 2 right before redline, then at 4000 it switched to 3 by itself, instead of letting me redline,

mine is an 05 and it switch the way i wanted to, it WILL automatally switch to an upper gear if you forgot to tap to the right and when you hit 6100rpm
i acturally tired to downshift thru a right turn once, and i tapped my gear lever once to the left, and it acturally down shifted to 2nd, and i have to say, it took that corner pretty fast.

but at 3500rpm it shifted to 4th by itself????
Maybe a fault on the automatic gear!!! (my dads clk had a lot of this problems, just went to dealer to clean the faults and it will run ok, just some times...)

I have rev my car to the point that fuel is cut out, it didn't change gear at redline. BMW is weirder, once i went uphill with tiptronic on (2nd gear), when the rpm dropped, the car stalled, damn that's weird for auto.

Unlike conventional autoboxes, semi-automatics are based on the same architecture as manual gearboxes. They have a clutch and a regular synchromesh gearbox. In their case, hydraulic systems operate the clutch and gear-shifting under the control of increasingly sophisticated electronics. This is F1 technology.

i wonder if this can be reprogrammed in older cars then, in order for it to drop back to 1 instead of hold it to the left or tap to the left until reaching the desired gear...

If u drive long and hard enough the ECU will adapt and eventually hold gear.
