01-05 C230 Kompressor Sedan
Ok. Please clear the confusion for me. I'm looking on ebay, and I'm seeing 2.3L and 1.8L. Mostly 02-03 are 2.3L. What are the differences in the engines? Are they both supercharged? How do they sound? Which is better? How can I tell if it's a 2.3L or a 1.8L (if seller is falsely advertising)?

2002 C230 Coupe(M111)
The M111 2.3L S/C engine was only used one year, for CL203 2002 Coupes only. This is the same motor as from the old SLK. Its considerably more powerful than the 1.8, much more than you would think by looking at the HP. The fat torque curve is what makes the 2.3 a more satisfying drive. Its also fairly easy to modify. A pulley ads another 35Hp. The M111 is a bit rough around the edges however. Its loud until the supercharger bypass closes after startup...and it does make more noise and vibration than any other MB engines. OTOH, the howl it makes when the supercharger winds up is rather intoxicating.
The M271 1.8L S/C engine debuted in late 02 on some european CL203 coupes, and then in 03 on all CL203 Coupes. In the middle of the 03 model year, the the W203 C230 sport sedan became available with the 1.8L engine. Frankly, they should have called it a C180...and prevented the confusion that has ensued about engine sizes. All W203 C230 Sport Sedans have used the 1.8L M271 engine. The 1.8 has twin balance shafts, and is very smooth and quiet most of the time. It still has the loud startup due to the cat preheat cycle. It also gets significantly better mileage than any other MB engine.
There were never any 2.3 M111's in a W203 C230 Sedan. The W202 C230 sedans have an lower output version of the M111, but are for the most part the same as the 2002 Coupe and SLK engine.
All this information has been mentioned MANY times before.

It really depends on what country are you in as they make different engines for Australia, U.S., Europe... For example, say you live in the U.S. then your choices are really simple as the only 4 cylinder motor in a 2001-2005 C sedan is the 1.8l. If you find one with a 2.3L maybe you must be in a different country.
The exception in the U.S. is the one year fluke, the 2002 C Coupe (not sedan) had a carryover engine from the previous body style 2000 C Sedan, the venerable 2.3L. With the right pulley kit, they were very fast cars that were frequently raced at dragstrips across America. Consider yourself lucky if you can find one of these.

Chill out guys. Damn.
Anyway, I knew there was something up when I saw C230 Sedans with 2.3L on eBay. I didn't think they had a 2.3.
I wonder if you can swap the supercharger easily on the 1.8L. I mean buying an after market and swapping it.
