Case against the 2006 C230 V6

Okay, lets be civil here. This is just meant to be a thread to discuss the pros and cons of the new C230 V6. I was going to wait for the 2006 but I decided to go for the 2005 for the following reasons below:

The V6 is heavier, less gas milage, no AMG body, similar or less power to weight ratio, more expensive, more difficult to mod - no SC to overboost and all mods have to be done to TWO banks of cylenders instead of one; ie: two headers instead of one.

Can someone come up with a good argument for the new V6? Lets try not to step on any toes.

Don't hold your breath for good mileage with the C230k. With 5000 miles on my Coupe, I have only averaged 19.5 mpg at a mean speed of 21mph. Admittedly, two thirds of these 5k miles correspond to rather abrupt city driving (16.5 to 19.5 mpg ratings) and I do get a decent 30 mpg on the highway, but overall my 1.8-liter Coupe is no better than my 3-liter V6 Passat -- which is itself not an example of sobriety, to say the least.

Does your V6 Passat have a computer system similar to the c230? In which you could compare 5000 miles on the Passat to the Mercedes?

You are doing city driving and of course your mileage will be lower.

I have a similar amount of mileage on my 05. With 4800 miles I have an average speed of 40mph with an average mpg of 28.

The car does almost always get 30+ mpg on highway trips over 15 miles. (My commute to work is 30 miles one way so I see stats. similar to this daily.)

I am also conservative with the throttle.

No complaints here.

wow, my C230K SS gets WAAAAAY better mileage than my old w202 C280 SS. I can get 25.9 mpg in a 17 mile commute in DTLA in pretty bad traffic. Also, when I'm harsh on the throttle and drive it like crazy I can still get around 25mpg. For long trips I've gotten 32 mpg. I love the gas mileage on it. My old w202 got less than 20 mpg.

Yep. The Passat gives about 16.5mpg in town (vs. 16.5-19.5 for the C) and gets about 29-30mpg on the highway (vs. 30-31 for the C).

Are you talking about C230 or C320? '2005 C230 is I4, C320 is V6.

Who says the '06 wont be a "sport" model and NOT get the AMG kit and lowered suspension?

"Good argument for new V6"

What "new V6"? The old, C240 V6 is quieter and smoother (less 'peaky' and vibrates less).

my two V6's (one C320 Sport Coupe and one C320 Sport Sedan) get the following averages:

- Coupe: city 19-21 mpg / highway 25-32 mpg
- Sedan: city 20-25 mpg / highway 27-35 mpg

my C320 Coupe is chipped though, so I drive it harder & faster !

Mercedes has done away with the C230 I4 for 06....the new C230 will be a 2.3 liter aluminum block V6, they will also offer a stroked version called the C280 as well as the new C350. They just updated some info on Mercedes-Benz international site over the last week, so you can check torque/hp ratings there.

Actually all the posting show a 2.5 for the 230, a 3.0 for the 280 and a 3.5 for the 350.

Yep...supposedly ~200HP for the 2.5L V6 replacing the I4 SC.

Couple days ago the dealer said price for the 2006 V6 C230 goes up and loses content - namely the AMG front end.

Although I believe you that your dealer may have said that, I would take anything a dealer says with a grain of salt...especially about future models. Heck, they usually don't even know much about the current models!

Agreed, although it does make sense to take the AMG front end off the C230 - I think us 05ers just got lucky on that one.

how right you are. when I first ordered my c320 ss, the salesman insisted that this car could not be ordered with a manual transmission even though the sale brochure, mbusa.com, and all the car magazines said manual transmission was standard on the c320 ss

The new 205HP V6 replaces the slow *** C240 and the supercharged C230.

The C240 is, IMHO, more peaky than either supercharged engine(2.3 or 1.8). Both supercharged engines come out of the hole a lot harder than the 2.6L V6 in the C240 and pull better everywhere in the revband. The C240 feels like its asleep when you hit the gas at a stoplight. As the RPM's pass 4000 it starts to feel lively.

And although the v6 is much smoother than the 2.3L M111, after having been stuck in one for a few days now, its no smoother or more quiet than the 1.8, and rather surprisingly, it does vibrate at certain engine speeds on the highway.

C240 is a fine car if you ignore the motor's lazy nature. The 05 version handles just as good as the old sport models.

My C230 has gotten as high as 34mpg(admitedly, this is using the cruise as much as possible, coasting, and very mild accelleration- but its still amazing that the car can do so good on gas) on my work commute, and as low as 18(driving the brains out of it). On the highway, 30 is minimum, usually see 34 or better.

'06 line-up
C230 - 2.5 V6
C280 - 3.0 V6 (replaces C240)
C350 - 3.5 V6 (introduced early to replace C320)

If MB drops the "sport" versions of the C230 and C350, with AMG body kit, it will KILL sales!
