Thumbs up My So. Cal. Ferrari Experience

A few months ago, I spent several days at a business conference at the Hotel del Coronado, in San Diego, CA. I’m told this is one of the Ritziest hotels in the country, and this simple farm boy from the midwest was certainly impressed.

Anyway, one evening, the San Diego Chargers football team held a Private Awards banquet in the main ballroom of the hotel. Strictly black tie, including an off-limits valet parking area roped off for team members, staff, banquet guests, etc.

What a feast for the automotive eye… More high end Bimmers and MBs than you could count, several Porsches and Jaguars, one Rolls, two F355 Ferraris, one yellow 360 Modena and the most beautiful silver Ferrari I’ve ever seen in person, a brand new 550 Maranello. WOW! Made me wish I had packed my camera.

What I also remember about that night… Among this 25 car gaggle of millionaire trophies, each was immaculately clean and shiny… and each was totally STOCK as a box of rocks. Not even a “gold package” to be seen anywhere.

My take: Contrary to what some say on this forum, rich and famous people will spend money, but they don’t always go out of their way to stand-out in a crowd.

you are wrong MB-BOB...many SD Chargers have custom Mercedes and exotics. Take Marcellus Wiley and Jeff Graham, for example. Check 310motoring's website.

BTW Where exactly is flower mound?

I remember what I saw, lee2375. No pimpmobiles at this shindig. I'm sensitive to such self-indulgent idiocies, and I would have remembered such a thumb in the eye.

Maybe Marcellus and Jeff "hippy hopped outa da lame-o tuxedo sho and were badazz stylin' in da 'hood" somewhere else. Or, maybe they each have two cars. One for politically correct display where they act like adults, and one for the "let me pretend to retreat to my roots" crowd.

Flower Mound is 10 miles due north of the Dallas/Ft Worth airport.

MB-BOB, if you ever want to be impressed, just go to either Beverly Hills or Newport Beach. You will see just about any nice car you can think of. You name it, you'll probably see it in one of these Southern California cities.

Been there BlueBenz, and yes, very impressive, as expected. Now, what's more interesting, though, is the sleepy little town of Springfield, MO. (Where?)

There's an exotic car showroom in Springfield with every exotic imaginable, too. 8-10 low-mile Ferraris at any time, several Lambos, ocassionally an Aston Martin Vantage, etc. Can't remember the name of the place, but they advertise in every issue of Autoweek.

Yes, we midwestern hicks do know what a Ferrari looks like. I knew a Dr. in St. Louis who owned seven of them. My fav was his canary yellow 246 Dino.
