MB build quality is very inconsistant, you can get a perfect 2001 or one that visits the dealer on a regular basis. Also, once the initial problems are fixed, usually in the first year, the cars seem to be fairly reliable. One way is to find the dealer that did the service and get the service records. I wouldn't worry about a lot of stuff fixed in the first 2 years but look at what was done in the last 2 years to see if it's reliable enough for you.

I have had no major problems at all with my 01 C320. I have made several trips to the dealer with various electrical faults, like memory modules for power windows and such. But I understand by reading throughout these forums that those problems are endemic of the brand, not any particular model... and once these were fixed, it's been smooth sailing since.

2001 C240 auto for me, with 66,000 kms.
The bigger problems are as follows:
smartkeys replaced (on 4th and 5th keys now)
MAF replaced two weeks before warranty ran out
That's about it. Out of warranty cost include blown alternator and main fuse board, but that was because my dad fried my car while jumpstarting.. oh, and rear defroster shorted itself for no reason (unrelated to the jumpstarting incident). I consider myself one of the luckier ones to not have encountered the ESP problem.

I think the consensus is that once the initial bugs (if any) were fixed on those early new-model cars, then it was OK for the long-haul.
I think what Buellwinkle said is the best advice:
First 2 years (problems fixed) = you're probably OK.
Last 2 years (continuing problems) = then I would stay away.
