Changed oil filter on M271

Decided to change just oil filter at 4500 miles. I opened the hood to the 90 degree/full open position and I used a 1 1/8" socket to break the filter cap free. It is REALLY squeezed in there! There are a couple of vacuum hoses and a drain hose I had to move out of the way. Once the cap/filter assembly is out, you have to use some force to pull the filter off of the cap assembly, just as you must use some force to get the new filter back on the cap assembly. The o-rings looked fine, so I left them in place. I wound up tightening the filter cap down as tight as posible by hand. I put the socket over it and put some pressure on it, but I didn't want to break the plastic threads and it seemed as though hand tight was good enough. Not too difficult
The worst part was when I realized I left the smart key on the hood of our Sequoia. Wifey went to get lunch and the key was of course gone when she got home. I found it a couple blocks away. Someone had driven over it, but it still worked

Sounds funny but lucky you managed to find it and it still works. Ancient chinese proverb: searching for a needle in the middle of an ocean

My brother is one guy who can drive to our nearby office with newspaper or bottle of mineral water on the hood of his Honda CRV without realising it.

That reminds me of a TV show where they do crazy stuff and film the public's reaction. On one episode they set a baby carrier with a babydoll in it on the roof of a car and drove around a parking lot as if they set it up there and forgot it. People were chasing down the car screaming at the driver, trying to get his attention. Hilarious!

Jim,

Did you use a factory filter, or aftermarket. I'm curious.

Is this where the oil filter is located? I'm trying to change my own oil too, but not too sure if this is the oil filter...

Yes, that is it! You see those two black hoses above it that go into the single straight tube? Where that straight tube makes a right angle turn and goes straight down, there is a plastic ring around it. Press that ring and the tube lifts striaght up and can be bent out of the way. Also, you can pull that drain hose off directly above the filter. It connects to a drain hole on that large black plastic thing that collects water at the base of the windshield. Is that called a "cowl"? Have a thow-away wrag ready when you loosen the oil filter assembly and lift it up as there will be some oil dripping from it. Once out, note where the bottom edge of the paper filter ends in relation to the perforated tube it is mounted onto. To remove the filter, grasp the actual paper filter with one hand and hold the filter cap assembly with the other hand and pull them apart. When you put on the new filter, make sure you use enough force to make it go completely onto the perforated tube. All this may be made easier if you remove the O-rings prior to removing the paper filter and replacing the O-rings after you get the new paper filter back on. I left the original rings in place because they are probably designed to last the entire time the oil is (12K miles?) and they still looked fine to me. After you drop the filter assembly back into the hole in the engine assembly, you should be able to tighten the down sufficiently by hand. After a hour or so uf use today, car's computer still says oil level is OK, so I must have done everything right

My C230 only has 2700 miles, but I decided to change the oil because I wanted to try out my new Pela oil extractor. Bought the filter at the dealer and then warmed up the engine a little and then sucked out 5.5 quarts of oil. Put 5.5 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40 in. I was careful to put in the same amount of oil that I removed because I did not want to overfill. The oil was very black, so I am glad I changed it. I used a 27mm socket wrench to take the filter cap off. It was a pleasant, easy job.
