Question 2005 navigation system

Is the navigation system in the 2005 C class, which is the same as the new ML, really as bad as it seems?

I just posted a few thoughts about it in the W164 forum

Your opinions?

Works fine in Australia and with voice control it's wonderful.

you wrote "One of the things I like about the Toyota and Honda systems is the fact you can read ahead at what your turns are going to be or even pick one of three best routes to your destination. In the MB system you take what it gives you and only hope for the best."

and I can do all of these things with the mb C-class navigation system:

1. I entered the destination.

2. the lady told me to turn right on Bollinger Rd in 500 feet and the navigation screen and multi display screen showed me to turn right in 500 feet

3. the lady then told me to get on I-280 in 200 feet and the navigation screen and multi display showed me that I needed to get on I-280 in 200 feet

4. I drove a while and suddenly destination was 0.4 miles ahead and the lady told me so

5. And I reached my destination.

Beside having voice activation, I don't see how this can be improved

Although you can see a turn ahead at a time, on the navigation system in the MDX you can scroll through the entire turn-by-turn route. I found that handy if I was in an area I sort of was familiar with so that I could get my bearings.

After spending some time really learning the COMMAND, it does a pretty good job of getting me where I need to go. That joystick input is not very forgiving...I would rather have a touch screen. Also, some more POI categories would be nice. Do the POI categories get updated on new DVD releases or just the actual locations?

The worst navigation system I have seen to date is the one in the Mini Cooper. That might as well not even have it as an option.

I have visions of the Cooper navigation showing a picture of the Earth with an arrow pointing somewhere on the surface.

Too many to list
I'm still having a hard time finding places on my NAV comand. I think the POIs are too limited. For example, I wanted to located the nearest Walgreens because I needed some prescriptions or Home Depot or Office Max, or even a local high school...as I was trying to find my sister's high school. The POI doesn't even have any of those listed anywhere. However, when I sat in the Lexus and Infiniti, their voice command was so easy as I only needed to say the name and there it is. No need to browse thru the long POI list hoping that it's in there somewhere. Another thing that really bothers me is that the system doesn't recognize closed roads or construction areas or even heavy traffic areas. Setting the settings to either Dynamic, fastest, etc...still leads me thru the same route. All I have to say is....the C-class NAV comand sucks big time compared to the Japanese counterparts.

Sorry for the rant...just needed to vent a bit....as I couldn't find alot of the places that I needed to find.

every now an then I wonder what people expect a navigation system should do...it brings you from A to B and if it does that in a reasonable way - then what else does one want?

1) POIs are limitted to whatever NAVTEC (or who ever it is that makes your disc) puts on the disc and has nothing to do with the comand OR mercedes

2) being able to go through the whole where-to-turn-into-what-street menu was available on the OLD comand 2.0s and is probably still available on the current comand...if there is anybody who used that feature before and thought it was extremely usefull: raise your hands...I for one couldn't care less about that

3) comand sucks because I don't like the joystick...well that is something I can't blame you for...I don't like that joystick either but that is what you get in a NA spec car where MBUSA wanted DC to use alpine MCSII navigation systems rather then using COMAND navigation systems like the ROW cars get

4) touchscreen navigation is soooo much better...I never got the meaning of touchscreen stuff in a car...especially not in the US where people drink and eat in their cars...touchscreen is nice when a car is new but once a car has done 200.000km or more the screens are blind...and that is what MBs doe in the ROW - run more then 200.000km.
