What you guys think? Are Japanese Cars catching up? Or you're MB 4 life
My 2 cents.

I love 300hp Japanese car!

Japanese cars ( really only Lexus ) is 'trying' to catch up but not without another 10+ years. At least, a good start is the brand Lexus officially adopted in Japan market. Here, few months back, the dealer priced the GS300 as close to a E320 ! And, the answer is they did not get any sales and had to lower the price after 2 months.

If USA to pay 40K for a IS350 (mid sedan) , we in Asia will pay 80K+ and this price is good for a 2006 E280 V6 , which in Asia represents a high status symbol for entry to luxury car ownership status.

Japanese cars will catch up the specification ( especially after the 280hp ceiling removed ); but they will not catch up the status of branding, resale market, varieties of car models, engine speciifcations that MB can offer. MB is still a company that sooo 'fit for growth'. Just look at now AMG version of new models can be launched almost in parelle as the basic ones. And, as I read, the 2007 C-Class will a car that has so much fun and no cars ever can beat. And, don't forget another big competitor BMW 3 Series.

Just keep our eyes opened.

why doesn't Lexus offer Manual Tranny for IS350? because they don't know how to make it for this new 300+hp engine. just give them couple years, they'll finally complete copying german engineering and paste it right in their IS350 transmission.

That makes for a torque poor motor, or one that has its torque peak well up in the rev range. Getting off the line quickly requires good traction and good torque. So....you have a lower torque motor, coupled to the oft front driven japanese cars meaning poorer off the line traction and its easy to see why a 260HP TL-S is no match for a torquey rear drive car.
Agree. Laws of Physic. Weight transfer...FWD slips on throttle off standing start cos all the weight moves to the back...and u lose traction for the driving wheel. On the contrary, RWD cars gain traction on the driving wheel because all the weight is now on the rear wheel. Even if it is same car, motor, only differ by FWD and RWD, the RWD will win the standing start.

and judging by the car you choose to drive, that wasn't very long ago that you noticed this feature.

i hear what your saying. i still think the japs offer vehicles with the best bang for the buck and don't nickle and dime the options like the germans do, but as soon as you close the door in a german car, you can feel the difference over japanese cars. Lexus GS430, IS300 Infiniti I30, I35, G35 coupe and sedan and nissan maxima are all cars that i've noticed this with right away. German cars just have that solid door close (hard for me to describe) that immediately differentiates it. Don't get me wrong, I came pretty damn close to getting a G35 coupe, but the interior styling really kept me second guessing it. i still love the exterior though, but i just love the way german cars feel and drive, especially BMW's. however, i like to keep an open mind and will not put down the new IS until i drive one for myself. Test drove the IS300 before i got my 330 and I felt the car overall was a huge disappointment and would have ranked it dead last in it's class. I have a feeling though Lexus is about to be a big player in the entry level luxury category w/ the new IS however. not a big fan of it's looks, but car and driver had some good things to say about it as a performer and even clocked it at 5.1 seconds 0-60 which is impressive. i must admit though that i do favor nissan over toyota.

me, if i were going Japanese, I would go for Subaru (WRX STI) or Mitsubishi (Lancer Evolution IX) . Lexus IS350 is nice but the other two cars are much faster.

Neither have navigation and I dont think they come with the supple leather that Lexus have.

If you're going to go that cheap, why not compare it to a C230k?

they're not that much quicker than 5.1 seconds but at least with the lexus you have alittle bit of luxury, some style and a naturally aspirated engine

I always love it when Tuscanraider provides a no-frill, to the point statement on these types of topics.

Face it, some of you bought the MB because of the God forsaken 3 pointed star. To the person who responded that Japanese cars are made of junk, you also happen to ride a Suzuki bike. I guess that's Italian. What happened to the Ducati or are you going to tell me that Ducati bikes suck?

As for cntlaw, MBs tend to have far better resale values in many Asian regions, especially Hong Kong, because of the "status symbol". They could care less how reliable the vehicle is, especially when most of their commutes are less than a couple of miles (< 3km).

Isn't that wild? Runs down the mighty McLaren Mercedes SLR for 1/4 the price. Only two things I don't like about the vette are the new front end, and the still awkward interior. One hell of ride though!

A friend of mine has an C5 Z06, and after taking that for a ride, I didn't think you'd ever see a better deal for the money...but I was wrong.

I went and drove this thing (IS350). It's pretty fast. The paddle shifters are kinda cheap feeling - not like BMW's. It handled very well. I'd drive it. I used to hate Lexus cars but I'd drive this one.
