car got scratched today (first one)

well after 4 months of having my car, i now have my first scratch. went up to the dodge dealership after lunch so a kid i work with could sign paperwork on a new charger he just bought. while leaving, there's a bunch of idiots working on a dodge ram right next to my car and noticed a nice, small thick scratch down to bare metal. i say to one of the guys "hey man, someone scratched my door". so the fat guy says "wasn't me", so instead of pointing fingers and seeing that these guys won't have the ***** to admit it anyway, i complain to the dealership since the service guys were working on the car. finally they agree to fix it, now here's my concern.

they were telling me about some technique that they have a company come by and do. he told me it's the same guy rallye mercedes uses and they match the color, and touch it up while making it undetectable. I said "it's not stupid touch up paint that looks like i put silver nail polish on the scratch is it?". but he said it wasn't and i won't even be able to tell there was anything done afterwards. said it takes about 20-30 minutes for the guy to do. anyone hear anything like this before and if so, please give me your opinions. i'm gonna freak if it looks like ***** afterwards. should be doing it thursday or friday. thanks for any help.

The first scratch is always the deepest

Personally if it's all the way to the paint, you're kinda screwed. Just try to see if you can get it minimized as much as possible.

I'd let them try to repair it with a 'spot job'.

Nobody can match the quality of the factory paint job (they can't spend the $$$ to get the same clean room, spray booth, etc).

If the touch-up doesn't work to your satisfaction, you can always insist on a full panel repaint . . . but I'd try to avoid going that route if at all possible.

No matter how good the shop, I've never seen a repaint that perfectly matched the original. Just my $0.02.

Sorry to hear it.

DMATRE is 100% right on. The dealers use the traveling touch up guys all the time. It is so much better than a complete panel repaint. It NEVER matches.

i'm afraid that it won't be to my satisfaction. they called over the used car manager and he said the guy matches and mixes the paint right on the spot with a machine in their truck. i'm curious of the outcome, but still annoyed and upset that this had to happen. we'll see what happens. it sucks that you do something nice for someone else and then end up getting screwed somehow in the end. any of you guys ever try that autopen or something like that?

unfortunately, you always take a risk every time you drive the car out of the garage. my car got no scratches or dents but the front spoiler got a bunch of paint chips due to daily driving.

interesting? well I had several scratches on my car due to an unfortunate incident in a parking lot (ya know the type of people that just swing there doors open without caring!!). I went to mercedes for a routine oil change and i asked them if they can help me out with fixing some of the scratches. The guy was real nice and he gave me a small container of mercedes touch up paint, similar to the ones they use on cars that they have to fix. the color matches pratically identical, the only problem is i dont know how to really apply it to the car without making it look like crap.

Well, it wasn't my car, but today some a-hole scraped the back bumper of my GF's brand new Honda s2000. It's no benzo like mine, but a damn beautiful and bangin coupe! Sucks! There are scuff marks all over the right lower side of the back bumper and a penetration into the bumper like a slash one one part. I made a police report and I was also thinking like you if I could buff the scuff's out and touch up the paint. I don't think it's smart in my case and we may have to go insurance/dedcutable on this one just to get the job done right. Unfortunately for you your's is a door scratch and nothing much you can do. I say take the chance with the guy because anything else is going to cost you a S hit load of money for something that frankly is bound to happen again. I wish I could find the a-hole who did this to my GF's car today. I'm so mad I could scream.....not to mention that this could have been my car in that spot.

If you think that's bad my car got keyed severely after while i was out surfing. And this scratch was deeep, all the way down to the metal. It's on the door on the right side about 2-3 feet in length. I sorta let it be for a while n the thing started rusting . After that i bought some touch up paint and did the best i could. It's very ugly and i hate it but it's a leased car... gonna drop too much money to get everything repainted.

too bad they won't sell this add-on body kit. With it in place, people can park the car anywhere and won't have to worry about scratches, dents, and getting keyed.

with that thing on, i think other drivers will park far away from the car for fearing you would dent their cars

if someone would sell such a package, there could be a market for it. Imagine parking a brand new car at the supermarket and not having to worry about those shopping carts.

Because you have a hideous car?
I'll pass.

Plus I think what you're talking about, it's called the Pontiac Aztek.

my thinking is, you would put the kit on when you have to park in a bad neighborhood. Some of these guys would probably buy it

Probably, but that sounds like a lot more hassle than putting on door ding protectors.

I wonder if putting a clear bra like the front of the car on the door panels would help

Especially on the rocker panels

Unhappy

Sigh, I got out of work this morning only to see some jerk off parked EXTREMELY close to the front of my car (I parallel parked my car in front of the Emergency Room entrance at my work.)

The jerk bumped my car. The ding would most likely be difficult for most people to notice, but I noticed it.

Sigh...

I used to make fun of my friends who got so obsessive about door dings, but now i know exactly how they feel.

*cries*

well, unlike scratches, dings can be removed. I had a ding some months ago and the guy took it out just like magic. I paid him $150. To me, it was worth it because like you, I hate dings.

Yes, I have one 1" ding on top of roof a few month ago and the guy took about 25 min to fix it, I can't tell where is the ding before !! Paid $175 because was on edge of the roof, the metal is thicker than doors ! I am totally happy with the outcome !!
