What about your daughter's upcoming ccoupe? :p
That way, she'll learn to drive responsibly (keep insurance low), and she'll appreciate the car since she pays for half of it.
That way, you can help her out and help her be responsible at the same time. No point in being the "rich dad" that hordes the money to himself.

I bought my daughter a 2002 Toyota Corolla last October, solving the "need" part of the equation. The understanding was that she could drive it to college for four years, and upon presentation of a diploma, I would sign the title over to her. I'm quite certain that most parents of normal means would think that more than generous. More important, my daughter was quite delighted, as she has no expectations of a Mercedes-Benz as her first car.
However, she totalled the car three weeks later with 420 miles on the odo. (Her fault. Insurance paid up then promptly cancelled my policy.) I am waiting until she decides whether to go to a commuter school or a university where dormatory is required, before deciding on a replacement vehicle.
So, I am not a "rich dad who hordes all his money to himself." But I can assure you I'm a pretty good one. My daughter would concur.

A parent's job is to provide a child what they need, not necessarily what they want.
Just found out yesterday that we'll be having a daughter in August!! Hope I can live up to this same standard!

If she totals a new car and it's her fault...I think the sting of paying the insurance premiums on her own is fair.
Why not use the money insurance gave you for the corolla to help buy her anything she wants...any amount above and beyond what you got from insurance would have to be paid by her.
I think kids gotta pay their own insurance so they drive safely and responsibly. Otherwise, when they do something like total a car and insurance pays for it, they think "Ha...I'm insured...no worries".
What do you think?
Hey MB-BOB, I think you should make your daughter pay every penny of her insurance.

My daughter is the youngest of three. The elder siblings wanted to goof-off and get jobs rather than earn scholarships to college, so I made them pay full freight on their insurance (but at least it was on my policy so they got some breaks). It didn't seem to have a measurable affect on their safe driving, though.
As far as applying the insurance money toward a more expensive car of her dreams... well, that runs more toward the "buying the kid what they want" end of the spectrum, which is a NO for me. My job is to provide reliable, practical transportation. She can buy style on her own nickel later. Once you have kids of your own, you will understand. Or, maybe not.
However, this is not an issue in my household, because my daughter only wants something reliable with 4 wheels (she's not into cars).

PS Regarding MB-BOB's replies I too agree 100%. However I'll keep my guns in check.

I made her pay the deductible for the accident, for starters, and yes, I agree kids should help pay (at least a portion) of the insurance, especially if they're working. If they don't have a job so that they can carry a 3.70 GPA in their studies, then I help more.

Sounds fair to me! =) You got any boys?
Please answer my question. Are you going to get some clear lens assemblies for the Sedan, too?

KJ, yep, the first is a boy, er young man, who will be 25 this Summer. He drives a 2000 Dodge Neon, which he proudly bought all by himself. (He says his Neon looks like the Coupe, and some on this site would agree.) He's eyeing the new Neon SRT(?) when it comes out.
